How To Use Wireless Internet In Italy

Many travelers to Italy, particularly those who plan on staying for an extended period of time, inquire about Internet service. More and more travelers want to or absolutely have to check their email and Facebook accounts and surf the web while in Italy. While there are Internet cafés available in many towns and cities, that is hardly convenient. First, you have to fit into their schedules. Second, it's expensive! Currently, it costs about 5 Euros per minute to rent a computer in Italy with Internet access. Also, Italian law stipulates that you must let the shop owner scan or copy your passport. An alternative is to use your current US or Canadian cellular carrier for your international data needs, but not all providers offer wireless data service for Italy. Those that do have astronomically expensive rates and furthermore, their service is cumbersome and difficult to use.

Is There A Better Alternative?

Cellular Abroad's unlimited wireless service for Italy is compatible with any device that has wifi (this includes most devices). Here is how it works. Available for rent or for purchase, the Huawei E585 and the MiFi 2352 are two portable wireless devices that create a mobile hotspot, similar to what you would find in Starbucks and many public libraries. These devices are intended for use overseas, including Italy. Since either is about the size of a cell phone, you can throw it in a bag or put it in your pocket. When you need to access the Internet, even for several hours at a time no matter where you are, you just turn on the device and create your own personal hotspot. The service works wherever there is cellular coverage. Map of cellular coverage in Italy. What's more, up to five devices can use it at the same time. For example, if you have an iPad and your friend has a Blackberry or computer or iPhone, as long as you are within 30 feet of the device, you can both access the Internet at the same time. Most importantly, you do not need to worry about how long you are browsing the web or how many emails you send or receive, because the service offers unlimited connectivity. This solution, particularly for those who need to access the Internet more than just a few minutes a day, is an exceptional value.

If you plan on visiting Italy for less than 2-3 weeks and are not a frequent international traveler, it is recommended that you rent a hotspot device for Italy. If you are staying in Italy for a longer period of time (study abroad students, renting a home, moving to Italy), it is recommended that you purchase a device.
