Soccer is the national sport in Italy, but Formula One racing is the national passion. If any track on the world circuit can claim to be the spiritual home of Formula One, it must be Monza. The Autodromo Nazionale is located 10 miles northwest of Milan in a lovely park, and it always boasts a massive crowd of colorful, raucous Ferrari tifosi (fans).
The track combines an old banked oval circuit and a road course. It is the fastest circuit in Formula One, with drivers lapping an average of over 145 mph. The fastest race and the closest finish have both been run here. Advance tickets are available by email. As for the price, we revert to that old adage: "if you have to ask, you can't afford it!" You can get there by train from Milan, or by car from anywhere. Parking costs an additional 25 Euro/day. You can also purchase a three-day pass, which allows you to see the preliminary trials. For more information, visit the official Monza web site. If you really want the ultimate Formula One experience, take your own test drive on the course.
The other Formula One race held in Italy is at Imola, on the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. For information call +39-0542-31444 or click here to visit the Imola race course website.
