Going To the Races in Italy

[Regions of Italy] [Back to Playtime In Italy]

Soccer is the national sport in Italy, but Formula One racing is the national passion. If any track on the world circuit can claim to be the spiritual home of Formula One, it must be Monza. The Autodromo Nazionale is located 10 miles northwest of Milan in a lovely park, and it always boasts a massive crowd of colorful, raucous Ferrari tifosi (fans).

The track combines an old banked oval circuit and a road course. It is the fastest circuit in Formula One, with drivers lapping an average of over 145 mph. The fastest race and the closest finish have both been run here. Advance tickets are available through a very complicated procedure, by sending a fax to 011-39-320-324. They range from $30-500. (but the most expensive ones are already long gone!). You can get there by train from Milan, or by car from anywhere. Parking costs an additional $25./day. You can also purchase a three-day pass for about $100. ($150. with parking), which allows you to see the preliminary trials. For more information, visit the official Monza web site. Most of the information is Italian, including how to take your own test drive on the course (it costs 26 Euro per half hour, on Saturdays and Sundays only).

The other Formula One race held in Italy is at Imola, on the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. For information call 011-39-542-31444. Click here for their website.
