FULL-DAY EXCURSION TO THE CINQUE TERRE FROM LIVORNO

Your driver will meet you at the dock and take you for a spectacular drive straight north. At first your eyes will be glued to the east, where the gleaming marble slopes of the Apuan Alps are so white that they look like glaciers. Then look west to the silvery Mediterranean as the coastline expands to become the Bay of La Spezia, one of the most majestic harbors in Europe. Soon afterwards you'll come to the first of the world-famed "five villages," Riomaggiore. Here we suggest you leave the car and take an invigorating but moderate hike on the Via dell'Amore (Lover's Lane), a paved footpath that hugs the cliffside far above the waves crashing on the rocks below. The walk ends in Manarola, where you'll meet your driver to continue this unforgettable day alternating between enchanted olive groves, vertiginously terraced vineyards, and colorful fishing villages that somehow manage to cling to perpendicular hillsides. Along the way, be sure to stop for lunch and try the local pesto: you have never tasted any as exquisite in your life! Go ahead and wash it down with wine made from those hearty grapes. After all, your driver will take you back to the ship!

This tour lasts 9-11 hours. Meals are not included, and there may be a small fee charged locally for the Via dell'Amore. Click here for more photographs of the Cinque Terre.

FULL-DAY EXCURSION TO FLORENCE FROM LIVORNO
Your driver will meet you at the dock and take you for the 60-minute drive to Florence, past the rolling hills of Leonardo Da Vinci's homelands, which were to appear again and again as backdrops in his paintings. In Firenze you may choose to visit the Uffizi Museum and/or Accademia Galleries and/or Palazzo Pitti, three of the greatest museums in Europe. Your driver will be happy to take you to any site you choose, and if you would like to visit a museum, we will be happy to arrange advance purchase of tickets (mandatory). Since your driver is not a licensed guide, he cannot enter the museum with you but we can arrange for a guide in advance. You may also intersperse your time in the vehicle with pleasant strolls down cobblestone lanes, through majestic squares and across ancient bridges, pausing along the way to admire Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the cathedral and Giotto's belltower, and the fascinating artisans' quarter across the Arno River. After a pause for lunch on your own (your driver will gladly suggest some favorites!), you might like to do a little leather, gold or clothing shopping near Ponte Vecchio before your driver takes you back to the ship.

This tour lasts nine hours. Meals, entrance tickets and museum guides are not included. We will be happy to assist you with museum reservations and/or a guide (these must be purchased in advance).

A
variation of this day includes Florence and Pisa. The morning begins with a short drive to Pisa, where you'll see the Plaza of Miracles, surrounded by the dazzling cathedral, baptistery, cemetery and of course, the Leaning Tower. Due to distances, there is no time to climb the Tower, but even if you choose to just admire it from below, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. After the driver shows you what's hidden beyond the cathedral, you'll continue on to Florence. This tour lasts nine hours. Meals and entrance tickets are not included. FULL-DAY EXCURSION TO LUCCA & PISA FROM LIVORNO

Your driver will meet you at the dock and take you to see two cities that are as different as they are close to each other. Its seems impossible that Pisa, an extravaganza of gleaming Italian Gothic, could be only a few minutes' drive from Lucca, a reserved Renaissance jewel hiding within its tree-topped ramparts. When you see them you will understand just how isolated were all the city states of central Italy for centuries. Hard to imagine in this age of telecommuting! Your fascinating day will start as you ride beneath the majestic umbrella pines that line the ancient Roman road leading to Pisa. You'll cross the Arno River and then suddenly there you are in the Plaza of the Miracles. Be sure to visit the cathedral and baptistery, and the spectacular cemetery. Of course you may climb the tower, but even if you choose to just admire it from below, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Afterwards, sit back and enjoy the mountains on the horizon as you take the short drive to Lucca, where you'll find a host of great little restaurants for lunch on your own. And then treat yourselves to the best digestive ever: a walk along the top of the ramparts. From here you'll see the magnificent churches and monumental palaces, as well as the narrow winding alleys and the unique oval piazza that you will visit on foot after you come back to earth. Your driver will be waiting to take you back to the ship after this memorable day filled with history and art.

This tour lasts nine hours. Meals and entrance fees are not included.

FULL-DAY EXCURSION TO SIENA FROM LIVORNO

Your driver will meet you at the dock and head straight east, across the fields and rolling hills of Tuscany. The views are enchanting, with ancient stone farmhouses surrounded by glorious vineyards and silvery olive groves, "guarded" by black-green regiments of cypress trees that seem to march single-file up and down the hills. After a while your driver will draw your attention to the horizon ahead, over which you'll see Siena's majestic tower appear. As you draw nearer to this ancient city, first established by Emperor Augustus, you'll see the formidable town walls, which protected its independence for 1500 years until, alas! the Medicis finally took over. (Best not to mention the Florentines while in Siena -- the proud local residents are still smarting from the defeat they suffered in the year 1555). Once inside the walls, you will have a rare chance to see a jewel of medieval and early-Renaissance architecture. There is nothing modern to spoil the effect here: even the shop signs are artistic. Siena is very steep, but it's small, so you can easily see all its sites in a day. Don't miss the shell-shaped main square, Il Campo, overseen by the soaring Mangia Tower; and the exquisite cathedral; and the museum, a treasure trove of 14th-century masterpieces. For lunch, you might pop into a grocery store and ask the signora to make you a sandwich with the crusty local bread and delicious local meats. Afterwards, treat yourselves to gelato in the Campo before your driver takes you back to the ship.

This tour lasts eight hours. Meals and entrance fees are not included.

The variation to this day will appeal to many travelers: add a visit to San Gimignano! After a breathtaking drive through the hills and vineyards, past abandoned towers and restored farmhouses, you will suddenly see that unmistakable skyline, the Manhattan of Tuscany. Next you'll debark to stroll up the cobblestone alleys to the quintessential hilltown, where you'll marvel at the fifteen ancient towers (San Gimignano's own version of the "keeping up with the Joneses" game). Pop into the 12th-century church and linger to examine all the local products in the many shops. Back in the car, you'll drive by another astounding skyline -- the perfectly circular fortress town of Monteriggioni -- before ending up in Siena. After lunch on your own, you'll have the whole afternoon to explore the town.

This tour lasts nine hours. Meals and entrance tickets are not included. There is not enough time for museum visits on this tour.
