Full-Day Tours Outside Rome
Classical Rome
Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, St. Peter's Basilica (with Papal Blessing on Sunday) & Piazza Navona
Tour Length: 3 hours approx.
Your official English-speaking guide invites you on this coach and walking tour of Rome's classic monuments. You'll start out on foot, heading first through majestic Piazza della Repubblica, where you'll see the "scandalous" Fountain of the Nayads. Next, your pleasant stroll wends its way through the historical center, down the hill to Trevi Fountain, and then along a special cobbled lane to Piazza Colonna, named for the spectacular marble column upon which are carved all the highlights of the realm of Marcus Aurelius. You might have walked right past this masterpiece, but instead you'll stop to admire the fierce Roman legions as they raid and vanquish fortresses and harbors and villages, on their way to build antiquity's greatest empire. Just next door is Bernini's Palazzo di Montecitorio, seat of Italy's Parliament. Here you'll see a giant sundial that really works: it was fashioned from an obelisk brought back from Egypt by those same legions. Continue along the secret pathway to the Pantheon, whose glorious interior you will visit. Next come Palazzo Madama, seat of the Italian Senate, and finally the pièce de resistance, Piazza Navona. Considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Europe, it is an unforgettable blend of artistic genius and everyday human activity. At this point you'll board the coach and cross the Tiber, passing alongside imposing Castel S. Angelo, Rome's bona fide medieval castle. Just next to it is St. Peter's Square, where your guide will tell you all about the Basilica. Afterwards, you will have time to explore this magnificent church on your own, to admire such masterpieces as Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's bronze canopy, before getting back on the coach.

| Hop on the coach with your official English-speaking guide, heading first through majestic Piazza della Repubblica, where you'll see the "scandalous" Fountain of the Nayads. Following Rome's ancient fortified walls, you'll travel through the Villa Borghese, one of the largest and most famous city parks in Europe, where you'll see Respighi's "Pines of Rome." At the opposite end of the park is the monumental gate Bernini designed for Queen Cristina's regal entry into the city. This was a big deal because the Swedish monarch had converted to Catholicism. Beyond the gate is lovely Piazza del Popolo, at whose center is an Egyptian obelisk dating back to Ramses II. The coach will now continue on across the Tiber to St. Peter's Square, where your guide will lead you into the Vatican Museums, up the world-famous spiral staircase, through the Gallery of the Tapestries and the Gallery of the Geographical Maps and finally into the Sistine Chapel, with its magnificent frescoes and Michelangelo's Last Judgement. | ![]() |

| For this afternoon tour, join your official English-speaking guide as the coach travels to Piazza Venezia. This fascinating square is home to "The Wedding Cake," as Romans sardonically call the elaborate monument commemorating King Victor Emanuel II. The whole area once belonged to the Republic of Venice (whence it derives its name), and it was on the tiny balcony of the Serenissima's former embassy that Mussolini addressed his spellbound followers many decades ago. From here you will proceed on foot to Michelangelo's exquisite Campidoglio, which was originally seat of the world's first Senate. From its lofty heights you can see the Roman Forum in perfect detail, and your guide will explain what went on in each of its many buildings. Now it's back on the coach to travel past the Circus Maximus (where Ben Hur won his famed chariot race), past the extravagant pyramid that Caius Cestius built for himself, and on to the magnificent church of St. Paul. One of the four papal basilicas, it rises above the church that Emperor Constantine erected on the burial site of St. Paul. Building went on for more than 1000 years, resulting in one of the most elaborate and downright beautiful artistic feats in the world. After your visit, you'll travel back to Old Rome with a stop to visit the Coliseum. | ![]() |

Follow the steps of the faithful on this afternoon tour through the artistic and historical highlights of Christianity. You'll begin at Santa Maria Maggiore, the only one of the four papal basilicas which has managed to retain its original interior -- resplendent with some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the world. More of these are on display at your next stop, the parish church of the Pope, San Giovanni in Laterano. Few churches in the world are more imposing, and your guide will explain the treasures during your visit. When you board the coach you'll drive under the city's ancient wall and onto the Ancient Appian Way. Once the main road into the Eternal City, it was built by the Roman legions and still shows the marks left by their chariots. Because this spot is outside the city limits, it was chosen by the early Christians for their secret services and burial grounds. Here you'll descend below the surface to see where they worshipped and to see the loculi where they found their rest, often after having endured cruel martyrdom. On the way back to the city, you'll drive past the spectacular ruins of Caracalla, the largest and most extravagant of the Roman baths. |

This is everyone's favourite tour! After dark, few cities on earth are as magical as Rome. Warm amber lights bathe the ancient ruins, statues, obelisks, fountains and palaces, turning the whole scene into one monumental outdoor salon that invites you to "come in and make yourself at home." Glimpse the Imperial Roman Age as you drive by and admire the Roman Forum, the Coliseum, the Arch of Constantine and the Circus Maximus. Leap into the Papal era when, driving along the banks of the Tiber, you see the Jewish Quarter and synagogue, the fairy-tale Tiber Island, and the spectacular medieval Sant'Angelo castle, and of course, St. Peter's Square, where a tiny light turns the dome into a magical jewel. Next you'll follow the ancient Aurelian Wall alongside the Villa Borghese park, from Porta Flaminia (through which you'll admire majestic Piazza del Popolo) and Porta Pinciana (beyond which you'll see Via Veneto, famed symbol of la dolce vita. Along the way you'll make two unforgettable stops: at Piazza Navona to see Bernini's beautiful Fountain of the Four Rivers, and at Trevi Fountain so that you can throw your coin into the fountain. The tour ends at the starting point. |
