A 17th-century villa overlooking Orvieto, surrounded by the peaceful countryside just a 10-minute drive from the town center, train station and car rental office. The property produces its own olive oil, jams and soaps, and there is an outdoor swimming pool. Guests have free parking and free Wi-Fi in public areas. Occupying a 16th-century building in Orvieto's historic center, five minutes' walk from the cathedral. It has a lounge and kitchenette on the ground floor and three guestrooms on the upper floors. Each room features arched ceilings and classic-style furniture, as well as a fan, TV, free Wi-Fi, and a private bathroom with a hairdryer and toiletries. Centrally located on the city's main square, 500 yards from the cathedral. The five guestrooms feature a desk, TV, and electric kettle, while the apartments feature a separate dining room with fully equipped kitchenette and an LCD TV. All have air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and private bathroom. An Italian-style breakfast including traditional sweet products and hot drinks such as coffee and cappuccino is served in a room with frescoed walls and fireplace. Occupying a historic building dating back to 1900 in Orvieto center, just 100 yards from the cathedral. The five air-conditioned guestrooms have a classic design with decorative frescoed walls. Northern Umbria

Castello Di Petroia

If you want to stay in authentic Italian castle (and not in the outbuildings as is usually the case with "castle" lodgings), choose this fairy-tale historic site made of several medieval buildings surrounding a 12th-century fortress. Its location between Gubbio and Perugia also makes it excellent for touring Le Marche. It is completely furnished with superb original pieces crafted in the castle's own workshops. The gracious owner and his wife mingle with guests to make it feel as if you are their personal guests. Outside you will find free parking, a lovely swimming pool and miles of hiking paths, not to mention the estate's prized white cattle. Inside, the 11 guestrooms feature exposed wood-beam ceilings and old prints or paintings from the 18th-century. Some rooms also have a sofa-bed, a whirlpool tub, and sweeping views out over the valley. Internet use exists but it can be limited, given the thick stone walls of this amazing castle! Read more....
