Outdoor Food & Antique Markets in Emilia Romagna and the Marches
Outdoor Food & Antique Markets in Emilia Romagna and the Marches
Apart from being the most unique source of souvenirs and consolation gifts for the
friends you left behind, outdoor markets are some of the most interesting places in Italy. Almost all of them
offer a collection of items that ranges from near-worthless knickknacks to priceless works of art, from the
ancient to the post-post modern. Some markets are specialized but all welcome visitors, who are encouraged
to have fun bargaining in English, Italian, sign language or any combination of the above. A word to the wise:
keep your money and valuables stashed under at least one layer of clothes. Who wants to spend the whole time
worrying why all those people are jostling you?
Here is a partial calendar of outdoor markets held in Emilia
Romagna and the Marches.
Keep in mind that special outdoor markets are almost always held on the occasion of town fairs and festivals.
- Fontanellato
(Sanvitale Castle; third Sunday of the
month except January). About 250 stands offer all sorts of antiques. Good selection
of turn-of-the-century bric-a-brac, also weapons and scientific instruments. Even
if you buy nothing, the spectacular setting is worth the visit.
- Modena
(Novi Sad Park; 4th Saturday and Sunday of the
month except July and December). One of the most important antique markets in the
region. All sorts of wonderful items at bargain prices, but last we heard, the rage
du jour was American cookie jars!
- Tolentino
(Sala S. Giacomo and Palazzo Fiduzio; 4th
week end of August). This is a great market for collectors. Coins, cameos and walking
canes are specialties.
- Ascoli Piceno
(Cloister of S. Francesco church, Via
Trivio, Piazza Rome; 3rd week end of the month). Apart from the absolutely beautiful
setting, this is a good place for bargains in ceramics.
- Parma
(Via d'Azeglio; every Thursday afternoon).
- Brisighella
(Via degli Asini; Friday evenings from
June to September).
- Rimini
(Piazza Cavour; Friday evenings).
