[Back to Piedmont]
Piedmont is a food lover's paradise. Occupying a large area that borders on France and Switzerland, it is a world unto itself. Perhaps it was the thick fogs (nebbie) that often shroud its world-class vineyards - even giving their name to the region's premier grape, nebbiolo - that cut it off from the rest of the peninsula. Each of the region's steep rolling hills is guarded by a hopelessly picturesque castle, originally built to keep all foreigners far, far away. Over the centuries, the piemontesi have learned to rely on their own small community for everything, which may be why it all looks so immaculate, impeccable and perfectly staged. Piedmont is definitely always ready for its close-up! Our Photo Album concentrates on the tiny area that produces the highly prized grapes that go into the making of such vintages as Barolo and Barbaresco. If you come here in the fall, be sure to try a bottle accompanied by a plate of fettuccine topped with a shaving of the world's most celebrated truffles, also a local native.
