Places To Stay In Valle D'Aosta

Even in Aosta and Gran Paradiso, you will usually have little trouble finding good accommodations in this region. Tiny, family-run hotels are prevalent and seem to exist in even the smallest hamlets. In Italy Online does not currently work with these properties, but we are always happy to inform our readers about places we or other readers love (or hate!). • SAINT-PIERRE
  • Hotel Residence Chateau (Via Liberta' 10, 11010 Saint-Pierre, tel. 011-39-0165-903-820). Occupying a typical mountain chalet in a small town outside Aosta, this simple but charming hotel makes a great base for visiting not only the town of Aosta but all the amazing castles of the region. Snowy peaks are all around, and the ski lift takes off just a few feet from the front door.
• CHAMPOLUC
  • Villa Anna Maria (Via Croues 5, 11020 Champoluc, tel. 011-39-0125-307128/307984). If you want a mountain chalet that is simple yet charming, this is the place. Its location makes it a perfect starting point for hikes to Mount Rosa and the spectacular valleys that surround it. Not all rooms have baths, but all have telephone and TV, and there's a nice restaurant. Only the restaurant closes periodically.
• AOSTA
  • Hotel Le Pageot
  • Cecchin, Du Pont Roman (Via Ponte Romano 27, 11100 Aosta, tel. 011-39-0165-45262). Don't be put off by the entrance, through the adjoining trattoria. The rooms here are pleasant and nicely furnished, with handmade lace curtains framing the view of the Roman Bridge next door. Breakfast is served in the wine cellar or outside in warmer months. Closed November.
  • Milleluci (località Porossan Roppoz 15, 11100 Aosta, tel. 011-39-0165-235278, fax 235284). Overlooking picturesque Sant'Orso, this hotel occupies a rustic old building that has been remodelled most elegantly. Rooms are airy and pleasant and the baths are usually quite large. Breakfast costs about $8., but the huge selection of homemade meats, cheeses and cakes make it well worth it. Includes parking.
  • De la Ville (Via Chanoux, Saint-Vincent 11027 Aosta, tel. 166-511502, fax 512142). Three stars; all rooms with bath; no restaurant.
  • Elena (Piazza Monte Zerbion, Saint-Vincent, 11027 Aosta, tel. 166-512140, fax 537459). Two stars; all rooms with bath; no restaurant. Closed November.
  • Les Saisons (Via Ponte Romano, Saint-Vincent, 11027 Aosta, tel. 166-537335, fax 537459). Two stars; no restaurant.
  • Haiti (Via Chanoux 15/17, Saint-Vincent 11027 Aosta, tel. 166-512114, fax 512937). Two stars; only eight rooms have baths; no restaurant. Closed January 15-February 15.
  • Posta (Piazza 28 Aprile 1, Saint-Vincent 11027 Aosta, tel. 166-512250, fax 537093). One star; not all rooms have bath; restaurant.
  • Leon d'Oro (Via Chanoux 26, Saint-Vincent 11027 Aosta, tel. 166-512202, fax 537345). One star; only eight rooms with bath; restaurant.
• POLLEIN
  • Diana (Via Capoluogo 150/151, 11020 Pollein, tel. 011-39-0165-53120, fax 53321). Set in a small village only ten minutes from Aosta and the autostrada, this hotel looks quaintly rustic on the outside and refined inside. The home-style furnishings will make you want to stay longer than planned, and the bathrooms are loaded with little extras. Friendly service, free parking and breakfast round out the attractions. Closed July 1-20.
• SAINT-CHRISTOPHE
  • Casale (reg. Condemine 1, 11020 Saint-Christophe, tel. 011-39-0165-541203, fax 541926). This is a nice example of what mountain hotels used to be like in Italy. Downstairs, the lobby is shared with the bar. Rooms are simply furnished with loads of wood. Bathrooms are old-fashioned, but large and well-stocked. For CNN addicts, there's satellite TV in the basement rec room. Parking and breakfast extra; closed January 7-February 7.
