The
Italian Riviera is a narrow and impossibly picturesque strip of white sandy beaches, colorful fishing harbors
and dark-green hillsides that stretches from France to Tuscany and is bordered by the French Alps. Now, if
that doesn’t sound like a vacation paradise we don’t know what does! The region is anchored right
in the middle by its capital Genoa, a former maritime power whose ancient narrow alleys snake their way down
the hillside to a maze of 19th-century palaces and a bustling 21st-century harbor, one of the Mediterranean’s
largest and most vital. Few tourists come here, unaware of the superb museums, delightful markets and enchanting
side streets they are missing. Most people head for the stunning beaches just east of Nice and Monaco; or
to the casino in San Remo; or to the many fishing villages lining the western shores of the region. South
of Genoa are three very different resort towns: jet-set Portofino (where you are likely to see several $100-million-dollar-yachts
vying for space in the tiny marina); elegant Santa Margherita; and lively little Rapallo, where the shopping
is excellent. Continue on and you’ll come to the renowned Cinque Terre, five postcard-perfect villages
clinging to almost vertical hillsides lined with vineyards and olive groves and hundreds of miles of hiking
trails. Stop to visit the promontory of Portovenere, which looks like something straight out of King Arthur’s
court, and before you know it you’re at the border of Tuscany. Along the way you will have soaked in
some of the most spectacular sightseeing Italy has to offer, perhaps accompanied by with a meal of super-fresh
fish and pasta with the local specialty: pesto sauce. In Italy Online is proud to offer
a wide selection of lodgings in Liguria, personally chosen and inspected by our staff. If you are new to our
