These three medieval buildings flank the historical Francigena Way, the route used by devout pilgrims to walk to Rome. Perched atop a hill between the Val d'Egola and the Val d'Elsa, surrounded by uncontaminated nature and spectacular views over olive groves and vineyards, the hamlet was probably already present in 1200 and connects the ancient parish church of San Pietro e Paolo in Coiano and the parish church of Santa Maria in Chianni, mentioned by the Archibishop of Canterbury in the diary of his pilgrimage to Rome in 994. The hamlet is situated in the heart of Tuscany, at the heart of the Florence - Siena - Pisa triangle, and close to such small medieval and Etruscan villages as San Gimignano, Certaldo and Volterra, making it the perfect base for a full immersion in history and for many easy day trips to Tuscany's famous sites. Because the restoration project was carried out following the original historical design, Medieval Borgo di Certaldo is one of the few farm properties which has been given approval by the Italian Art and Culture Institute. The quality of the apartments is very high. Rooms have been furnished with painstaking attention to every detail in line with the style and taste of Tuscan houses: furniture and accessories are mostly antique and have been found following a long and patient search in the area. |
