Ancient Walls of Sorrento

This newly renovated boutique hotel occupies a prime spot at the very heart of Sorrento, because although it is only a few minutes’ walk from the docks, the train, the bus and the parking structure (not to mention hundreds of shops and restaurants!), it is surrounded by a delightful lemon grove which, in turn, is tucked inside the ancient walls of a 16th-century fortress. The entire site forms a lush green gorge which is being restored so that locals and visitors can stroll along its shady lanes, but also enjoy concerts in a tiny amphitheatre at its far end. The whole setting gives the hotel a bit of a magical air, as if it were nestled inside a crystal ball making it a calm oasis in the bustling village of Sorrento. By the way, in case you didn’t already know it, this is our favorite town in the area, because it offers some of the best shopping bargains in Italy, some of the finest culinary experiences, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet anywhere. During the warmer months, it is indeed crowded with tourists, but it never loses its own character – that of a cheerful southern Italian town blessed with great weather and even more impressive views across the bay to Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. And if you truly want to enjoy authentic Italy, plan a visit for the winter months, which are cool but mostly sunny. This is just about the only hotel that you will find open that time of year.

Location: Half a block from Piazza Tasso, the main square in Sorrento. You do not need a car and you will not need to take taxis. Click here for a map.

Public Transportation : The very best location we know for staying in the Amalfi Coast area without a car. There is a public bus that goes to Piazza Tasso (purchase your tickets at any tobacco shop), or you can walk 5 minutes to the Circumvesuviana commuter train, which goes to Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum. Right down the hill are the Sorrento docks, where you can get the hydrofoil to Naples, all points on the Amalfi Coast, and Capri.

Rooms: 50 on five floors, including doubles, triples, junior suites and four split-level suites that can sleep up to three people. All rooms have a private bathroom with bathtub and/or massage shower (some standard rooms have a massage stall shower). Comfort rooms have a balcony and views of the pool or gorge or street; some are in a separate house on the ground floor by the pool. Junior suites have a double sofa or day bed in the sitting area, and three of them have two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. The suites have a “greenhouse” living room with a sofa or single bed, plus a staircase up to a bedroom with king bed, and one or two bathrooms (one with whirlpool bathtub). One triple-level suite has two double rooms, two bathrooms and a terrace with sea view.
