Grand Hotel Cadenabbia

Classic Fine Hotel - Lakeside Hotel - Romantic Lodgings

Character: Classic grand dame hotel on the shores of Lake Como.
Advantages: Right on the lake across from Bellagio. Choose a garden view room and save money, because there are exquisite lake views -- free of charge -- from a dozen lavish salons and terraces and balconies.
Location: In Cadenabbia, just north of Tremezzo on the spur where the lake widens on its way northward to the Alps. Unparalleled views of Bellagio and Varenna, and all up and down the lake. Click here to see a map.
On the edge of Lake Como is the tiny town of Cadenabbia, where you will find a delightful snack bar shaded by a grape arbor. On one of the area's many sunny days, sit here and gaze across the water to the world-class sight of colorful villages backed by sub-alpine mountains which are capped with snow almost 365 days a year. Sip an aperitivo or a blood-orange juice as you watch the steamers ply from one dock to another -- and if you're lucky you might glimpse George Clooney or one of his guests zipping past in their million-dollar speedboat. This little slice of heaven belongs to a super star of another ilk: a stately 19th-century hotel that just emerged from a total top-to-bottom renovation. At the bottom you'll find a glamorous lobby hung with Murano chandeliers, lined with precious marble and covered with Oriental carpets. At the top you'll find a panoramic gourmet restaurant. In between, you'll find (and we hope you'll enjoy!) countless nooks and crannies offering the most breathtaking views on this most picturesque of Italian lakes. You could stay here a month and still not discover all the vantage points this hotel has to offer. Compare its value to its price and we think you'll agree that Grand Hotel Cadenabbia is the best bargain on Lake Como.

Public Transportation: From Milan, you can take a train to Como, then step outside and get a bus that stops right in front of the hotel. After you have disengaged from your luggage, it's an 800-yard walk to the lake steamers that stop in all the main villages. If you are arriving from Malpensa, a bus goes to Como several times a day and connects with the lakeside bus.

Rooms: 197 on four floors, including singles, doubles, triples and quads. Floors are covered with parquet, marble or wall-to-wall carpet. Some rooms face the world-famous historical gardens of Villa Carlotta, and the hotel's own 2.5-acre English garden. These rooms are quieter than those facing the lake, and since the hotel offers so many comfortable salons, terraces, belvederes and corners with unbeatable views, we really recommend that you economize on a standard room here. Lake view rooms have a picture window; superior lake view rooms have a small balcony with two chairs and a table. We recommend you request a higher floor for these rooms. (There are also rooms with terrace but they have not been renovated so we do not sell them). Quad rooms are very spacious.

Features: Air conditioning, double-glazed windows, color satellite TV, direct-dial telephone with high-speed DSL connection, safe, and mini-bar. Each room has a private bathroom with bathtub and good fixed wall shower, hair dryer and courtesy set.

Facilities: Elevator; American buffet breakfast; swimming pool open May 15-Sept. 15; extremely panoramic indoor or outdoor rooftop restaurant open 7 days a week; rooftop cocktail terrace and sundeck; room service; free parking on the street.
