My daughter and I had a truly wonderful and memorable trip! And despite the weather challenges, we did everything we had hoped to do, including hiking all the trails. Our stay facility was perfect, just the best hostess and host, and we even got in an evening boat tour with "Angelo", when the clouds cleared for just the right amount of time. Thank you so much for your help in putting together our trip. My daughter and I have both promised each other a return trip.

The accommodations in Cinque Terre at the Villa Cinque Terre were excellent and lived up to our expectations and more. Worth the few extra Euros to have the view of the water. The desk agent, (Enrico, I believe his name is who has worked with you personally) was most gracious and helpful. His patience as we navigated about and directions as to train travel helped immensely. Please let him know how much we appreciated if you do contact. Breakfast choices were exceptional and a cheery place to base for the couple of nights we were there.

The trip was wonderful. Villa Cinque Terre was everything it was billed to be; charming, convenient, clean (immaculate) and a great location. The hikes between the “five lands” were a great experience, although there is no real caution to people as to the degree of difficulty involved. If one starts from Riomaggiore it seems like a cakewalk, but by the time you reach the Vernazza to Monterosso segment, it is a whole different story. My wife and I are in great shape, so we did it twice, but we ran into many people who were unprepared and seemed very pained by the experience. The ability to take the local trains between the villages at any time was a real plus as was the local ferry for both the convenience and the marvelous view. And the October weather was wonderful.

Florence B&B - great place on a very quiet side street, but only a block from all the action. Loved the location and the staff. The staff at the hotel helped with dinner reservations, rent-a-car issues and international phone calls. Best of all the air conditioning was awesome. Florence was hot and the hotel was cool. The room was a good size and the bathroom, shower, etc... were all good.
Ville Cinque Terre - the best place in Cinque Terre, I am convinced. the staff was awesome, the room was great and the shower was unbelievable with 4 different jet systems to shower. The staff helped with train reservations and even booked it on their credit card and took cash from us. When we were leaving early in the morning, they packed us a breakfast to take that was second to none. there was enough food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I would certainly stay here again and tell anyone going to Cinque Terre, this is the place to stay.
Hotel Alexandra - Great hotel, great location, awesome large room with very cold a/c.....The staff was helpful getting us airport transportation, etc....Another good choice that I would stay at again.

We had an absolutely WONDERFUL trip! My husband and I marvel constantly at how fortunate we were to have found the IN ITALY website and to have worked with you to plan our trip. As I believe I told you way back last March, this was a special trip for two reasons: we were going with our best friends who had never been to Europe before, and all four of us were celebrating our fortieth wedding anniversary. The trip was everything that we had hoped it would be, and more.
Our accommodations in Monterosso al Mare were as spectacular as advertised! We are so happy that we splurged and got the waterfront rooms. The owner and staff, especially Carla, were efficient and very welcoming. Breakfasts were absolute feasts. We were able to get any and all information that we requested right on the spot. We took both the train and boat from town to town, and even walked along the beautiful path from Riomaggiore to Manarola. Got some of the best pictures ever because the colors were all so vibrant and the buildings so interesting. In Vernazza we even climbed almost all the way to the castle and stopped in at a lovely restaurant for an afternoon aperitif and a look at the scenery from a different vantage point.
We went from Monterosso by train to Pisa where we picked up our rental car and drove to Greve in Chianti. There was a bit of an additional wait to obtain the car because the car rental agency is no longer located in the Pisa airport. Rather you have to go outside the terminal and fight your way onto a bus which takes you to the car rental area. However, we were given an upgrade in the form of a beautifully roomy Mercedes.
From Tuscany we went by train to Rome. Our stay in the Vatican Vistas apartment was certainly adequate, but also had a few flaws. Both Marco and his partner Hassan told us that they are disappointed in the owner and what he/she fails to do to keep the apartment up to par. We did not, for example, have a washer and dryer or access to one. The one electrical receptacle in the kitchen was literally coming loose from the wall and we think constituted a potentially dangerous situation. There was a coffeemaker, but no pot to catch the brewed coffee. We improvised, but it would have been nice to have had a working unit. We managed the 52 steps up and down from the street, but had a difficult time with the 14 additional steps to the second bedroom and the two other sets of stairs up to the balconies. The upstairs toilet leaked from the bottom and the shower head gave us one good trickle. In view of the fact that the only "clean" we got was the linens, we felt that the additional 50 euro cleaning fee was unnecessary for sure. Having said all that, however, we were out much more often than we were in, and enjoyed being in a central location.
We toured a lot on our own, then met our guide for our prearranged private tour of the Vatican Museum. Julio was a very nice person, and obviously very knowledgeable. It was unfortunate that he very apparently did not feel well the day of our tour. It was difficult for him to speak for us all to hear everything he said, and we all sensed that he was a bit anxious for the tour to end. We also wished we had had a bit more time in various areas to view the art for a bit more time. Our tour did not actually begin until 2:30 and we had to be out of the Sistine Chapel and on our way out of the Basilica by 4:30.
One hint we would like to pass along to any others planning a trip abroad - do go ahead and rent a cell phone for use during your stay. We had one sent to us in the US and bought an initial amount of time on it. We gave the number to our families to contact us in emergencies. We also used it all through Italy to make/confirm reservations, find addresses etc. We didn't use up all of our time, so paid nothing additional then just boxed up the phone and returned it when we arrived back home.
I would like to thank you again for all of your help in making this a dream vacation for the four of us. When next we travel abroad, you may be sure I will contact you immediately!

It was awesome!!! The hotel in Cinque Terre was wonderful and friendly. The rooms were adorable.The two areas things I would have liked to have known where that they did not have beach rights so we had difficulty getting chairs and umbrellas-they rent for the whole day and we did not get to the beach until 2:00 and everything was taken. They found 2 chairs, there were 4 of us, and they charged 25 euros mid afternoon. Also, the hotel overlooks a parking lot. I looked the in the other direction and it was beautiful, but I would have liked to have had the information.

Monterosso at Cinque Terre was one of the highlights of the trip to Italy, which also included stops in Firenze, Venezia, Montespertoli and Roma!!
We only have positive things to say about our stay at Villa Cinque Terre in Monterosso. The town is the best of the five small towns from a tourist perspective with a safe swimmable beach with ample space for sun tanners, if you are so inclined.
The hotel went out of their way to help us, their English was good, we DID eventually park the hire car on site, the upgraded room and bathroom was very well equipped and sea facing (with a balcony), even if the bathroom was tight and the colour scheme not in the conservative English vogue. The inclusive breakfast was the BEST we received in Italy - a full buffet including boiled eggs (only eggs were saw in Italy!).
They are literally across the street/walkway from the beach and minutes by foot away from the railway station and other facilities. While there, we took the train to Portofino/San Margarita/Rapallo (+/- 1/2 hour trip) near Genoa and would in any event recommend that the train be used in initially going to the resort, which by rail (tunnel) is very near La Spezia while by road is quite a trip bearing in mind the very severe topography to be traversed, albeit tarred, and the much longer distance involved.

Very friendly and helpful staff - wonderful location right on the beach front - very accessible to all amenities. Italy was fantastic (thanks for asking); we had an awesome, once in a lifetime experience. The accommodations we selected via In Italy were all true to the descriptions on your website, so we were very happy with our housing choices. Plus we are so glad we opted for a private tour of Rome and the Vatican. Using In Italy as a resource was one of the best planning decisions we made.
In Cinque Terre we loved the quiet location and elegant amenities of Villa Cinque Terre. We all agreed that its breakfast buffet was the best of any of the B&B's where we stayed. Watching the sunrise and sunsets from our balcony overlooking the sea was incredible. Walking out the door and swimming in the warm, clear waters of the Mediterranean was especially memorable. Taking the trains to the other villages and hiking between them provided spectacular vistas, excellent exercise, and an appreciation for the rugged wilderness that the world is protecting. Truly priceless experiences.
All aspects of our trip were great, which, in itself, was an unexpected treat (usually one expects something to disappoint - a hotel, a tour, a restaurant recommendation). We had none of that. The only complaint we had was the weather: we hit a heat spell, so rather than the average temperature of high 80's, we had mid to high 90's, with extreme humidity. To compensate, we drank lots of water, which only had healthful impacts on us.
When we next head to Italy, we'll have to explore the south and the eastern areas. And maybe the lake region. And we'll definitely use In Italy as a resource.

Villa Cinque Terre was great and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to our friends. Only suggestion would be to make sure the instructions to get there from the Autostrada are totally accurate. We never did find the one sign we were told to look for on our written directions so fumbled and stumbled around but eventually found our way to the hotel. Other than that, everything was exactly what we had hoped for!

I've enjoyed reading other clients' comments after their return from Italy and am pleased to join in myself! All of the accommodations and tours arranged through InItaly went very smoothly. The Villa Cinque Terre was amazing- I actually took a photo of their fish toilet seats! The staff was fantastic and the breakfasts were enormous. Sitting on the terrace roof you can watch all the action on the main street below. There were very few Americans and we enjoyed feeling a part of the European holiday season. Lots of families. If you like hiking you can make the trek between the villages. You really need three full days to take advantage of the area, given the expense and time involved in getting there. We also had no idea how difficult it was to get from the area to either Pisa or Genoa- my husband had to miss the last night in the hotel since the morning trains don't get you to the airport in time for a 7 a.m. flight. Also, the trains are not reliable (not the bus, either!) so give yourself a day (in the daytime) to get to whatever city you are going to fly home from...

Loved Villa Cinque Terre, would heartily recommend it to anyone, great staff, very supportive and all speaking good english, which although not necessary, is a welcome reprieve after travelling already 5 weeks through Italy and arriving very tired. I spent a lot of time on the roof top terrace, particulary at sunset, where you can take your drinks and nibblies and just relax. Try the local white wine, Cinque Terre, it is beautiful, and better than red wine on offer in this area.
I loved the local trattoria just down from the hotel on the beach side, unfortunately I cant remember the name, but I had very friendly service and the best tiramisu I ate in the whole of Italy. All of the gelato shops on the beach front sell gelato made on the premises- just watch which one the Italians are eating from- it's a sure guide to authentic food.
Be aware if you take the boat trips that you get on the right one- I was going on the 5 island trip, but got on the ferry that arrived 5 minutes before- it went to Portifino- I spoke with several other passengers who did the same thing- just double check, Portifino can sound similar to Portevenere which is where I wanted to go- but the boat trips are worth it. Also check with the information counter at the top of the Train Station (not the one below), there are horse rides and horse and carriage rides to be had- but they were totally booked out when I was there.
Think thats it- take your swimmers and sarongs and join the locals- it is very casual dress all day and evening- it really is the experience of the Italian family on holiday. enjoy.

Villa Cinque Terre was awesome! I would definitely pay the extra for a terrace or view room next time! The staff were very accommodating and friendly. It was definitely a highlight of the trip!! Miky's Restaurant, just down the street, was excellent. I highly recommend hiking between the towns. We hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza (pretty difficult) then to Corniglia (medium difficulty) and then took the train back and then the next day we took the train to Riomaggiore and hiked to Manarola and Corniglia (easy walks) and took the train back to Monterosso. This avoids having to climb UP the 400+ steps at the Corniglia train station! :)

Thanks for contacting me. We had a wonderful time at Villa Cinque Terre in Monterosso al Mare! The villa is very comfortable and well-appointed; the breakfast buffet was excellent, at least to our tastes; the location can't be beat; and the service was exceptional. I would also highly recommend three nearby eateries: A focaccio shop immediately next to the Villa; the restaurant "Bagni Fegina," nearby on the beach -- we highly recommend the seafood risotto, which is for two persons; and Miky's, where excellent steaks as well as seafood are on offer.
Anyone seeking an unobstructed seaview from their balcony at the Villa should request a room/suite on one of the top two floors. We were on the first floor up, and our view was partially obstructed by a beautiful old pine tree, frequented by a variety of birds. We enjoyed watching the birds, but others might prefer a clearer view of the sea and the surrounding scenery.
I would very highly recommend Villa Cinque Terre. We were there the last week of "low" season, when the weather can be a bit unpredictable -- but we lucked out, as the weather was perfect and the whole town was fragrant with the jasmine that was blooming everywhere!
The Villa is a very easy walk from the train station; it would be silly to hire a taxi, even if one were available -- it simply is not needed.
Excellent day trips out of Monterosso are, of course, the other four villages (accessible by train, boat, or on foot), as well as Portovenere (via train or boat), and Santa Margherita (via train) and neighboring Portofino (via bus or boat from St. Margherita). In low season, there was a weekly boat, on Sundays, from Monterosso to Portofino as well. Perhaps they go more often during high season.

My husband and I loved this little eleven room jewel. I almost hate to say how much we liked it as we want to go back and we want to make sure we can get a room. I have recommended it to two different people -- one while we were still in Italy! This hotel is family run and was completely updated in 2003. The hotel is very clean and quiet and located right across from the beach -- an easy walk from the train station. The hotel offers an ample breakfast served either in the hotel lobby or on the terrace. The staff is wonderful -- so friendly and helpful -- young Matteo is a delight!
Monterrosso is probably the easiest of the five towns to get around in. Definitely take the ferry from Monterosso to Riomaggiore -- from the boat you get a great perspective of the towns from the water -- truly breathtaking. Be sure to make the easy walk from Riomaggiore to Manarola -- it is beautiful.
The people of the Cinque Terre and La Spezia are very friendly. There are lots of good restaurants -- try the "baked spaghetti" at Miky. Be sure to look around a bit -- we found a charming little church with frescoes off the main street in the older part of Monterosso.
The Cinque Terre is a lovely part of a lovely country and should not be missed!

Our stay at this hotel was fabulous. Francesca, one of our hosts, was extremely helpful and friendly. She helped us with dinner reservations and gave us any information we needed. It was our son's 23rd birthday while we were there and on his birthday, while sitting on the rooftop terrace, Francesca brought him a tray of delicious cookies, sodas and fruit drinks. Plus a birthday message from the hotel. He was truly touched. The rooms were delightful, especially with all the fish decorations. Even a colorful toilet seat with a fish motif. Figuring out the beach rental for chairs and umbrellas was a little confusing. It would be great if they had their own private section of beach so guests wouldn't have to rent space. The mountains were gorgeous right in our backyard. Food was wonderful as well as local wines. We had two nights there but definitely needed at least one more. I would highly recommend this hotel and this area for a relaxing end to a vacation in Italy.

The Villa Cinque Terre was truly marvelous. I had expected a more rustic villa and was so pleased with the reality. Aside from the lovely decor which is very bright and modern, the owners and staff of the Villa made us feel more like guests in their villa than strangers staying in a hotel. We did most of the lower level walks between the towns and would definitely return to this part of Italy and would once again stay at the villa.
We booked a room with the ocean view and we were on the 3rd floor center with a beautiful view of the ocean and the surrounding hillsides. We marveled at the terraced vineyards which were so pretty and such an efficient use of land which would otherwise not be used. At night we could see the lights from the other villages.
We had no minuses with either the villa or the area except that I caught some weird cold and ended up needing to see a Doctor on the Saturday. Again, the Villa staff were so helpful in contacting the doctor (who made a house call) and following up with me to ensure that I was feeling alright. The personal touches made me feel like a private guest.
This was the last part of our Italian holiday and was an absolute delight.

We stayed for 3 days in Villa Cinque Terre. It was very clean and the staff was very friendly. We had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend Ciak's (pronounced Chuck's) restaurant. The food was unbelievable. Miky's Restaurant was also very good. The hike from Monterosso to Vernazza takes about 1 hr 40 mins and is difficult but worth it. The views of Monterosso and Vernazza are breathtaking. Thanks for recommending Villa Cinque Terre. We would highly recommend a week long stay in the Cinque Terre area.

We had a great time, and once again appreciate the help we received from InItaly, our favorite Italy web site.
We very much enjoyed Cinque Terre, and found Montorosso al Mare to be a good location to stay. Villa Cinque Terre was a charming hotel. We had opted for a sea view room, and were glad we had. We had expected some noise from the street below, but actually slept with our patio door open with no noise problems. The hotel was updated and well-kept-up, and easy walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. Our favorite was Miky's - great food, atmosphere and service. We took the train from Montorosso to Riomaggiori, and then hiked the first two trails to Monorola and Carniglia, then took the train the to Vernazza and back to Montorosso. We had a day and a half in Cinque Terre, and it wasn't enough. One more day would have been better.
We arranged for a "Florence the First Time" tour with Elisabetta, and it was a great tour. She's an art history major and really provided a good overview of Florence. It was our 4th visit to Florence (our favorite city), but others in our group were new to Florence and it provided a great introduction to the city.
On each of our trips we discover hidden gems. This time it was Badia Fiorentina, a small church in Florence. We went there because of a particular work of art, and found a Sunday service in progress. With incense in the air, sunlight streaming thru the windows and monks chanting, it was a very moving experience.
We also took a day-trip to Siena via train, and enjoyed that very much as well. We've visited several hill towns before, but Siena is much larger, and really deserves more than a day-trip. We did go to the Duomo museum, and climbed up to see the scenic view - not to be missed.
We started and ended our vacation in Milan, our first time in that city. Several highlights there: a tour of LaScala Opera House - it must be fabulous to see a performance there. Taking the lift to the top of the Duomo and wandering around among the spires and gargoyles. Browsing the LaBrera district - great shopping and restaurants. daVinci's Last Supper - very moving, but be sure to get tickets in advance. Favorite restaurant:

Our trip to Italy was marvelous. The weather was perfect and it was our first trip to Cinque Terre. The hotel was fabulous. It is bright and shiny, new. We enjoyed hearing the surf through our open balcony door at night. The breakfast was larger than any we had had in other hotels in Italy. The service was absolutely the best. I would definitely recommend anyone who is travelling to this area to stay here and use it as home base when travelling to the other villages along the coast. So glad we got your recommendation!

Thanks for asking for our input. The trip was great. "Villa Cinque Terre" was lovely – everything recently redone. It was a little "flashy" more of a "beach resort" theme than we expected but very, very nice. The only down side is that the balconies face the public parking lot and it greatly diminishes the "view". Otherwise, great.

Hello, Alex...........where do I begin.
I am not a computer junky and next-to-never even use the internet. My dear husband is 12 years my senior and celebrating a huge birthday this year - 70. So, I decided to surprise him with a trip to Italy. Our 20th anniversary is this year too. I started with Google and didn't know what else to do ......so, I easily found your web site. From there became impressed and excited about intrigued with your descriptions/pictures and maps. So, book out flight, book Villa Belvedere and then 5 months into my planning of the trip (which was not to be a group tour, just the 2 of us doing our own thing) finally announced to dear Ed ( the computer guru and research aficionado) my surprise Birthday present to him. I work on a commission basis and siphoned my cheques into a separate account (unrenowned to Ed) to pay for the whole trip before we left.......I did it! From there, I delegated all research (his expertise) to him for the planning of our trip.
The first bit of advise I would offer to anyone who wants freedom and independence to choose what and when they do what on a trip - don't go with a group!
Secondly, Trust InItalty to guide you with great detail.
Thirdly, don't expect Italy to be inexpensive. Go with a free, open mind and
welcome the wonderful experience of this dynamic, delicious county of warm
people and fantastic foods and wines.
Cinque Terre - DO NOT DRIVE TO MONTEROSSO AL MARE................!!!!!!! We
did - I was doing all the driving in Italy. No problem with any of it but Cinque
Terre - and the cow-path width road descending the mountain to the sea was
hair-raising. Especially as we missed the turn and ended up in the 'old' section
only to learn we had to
retrace our route along that nerve-racking mountain path up and down again
to the 'new' section of the town. As we arrived at Ville Cinque Terre I had a scotch BEFORE
I even went to our rooms. Whew........what a drive. Readers - if you're driving - drive and park in La Spezia
and take the train to Monterroso al Mare (11minute ride). The train station is 2 blocks
from the hotel and all on one level....very easy. I believed I was going to
live there as I did not want to face the drive back out again. And I'm not
a wimp driver. I can and did handle all driving everywhere else with no problem....(which
is pretty good if you've heard anything at all about Italian drivers)...but
there is no need to risk the drive to Cinque Terre. It is an unbelievable place
that is so picturesque and awesome.
Alex, you asked me to write. This will no doubt take you months to read but Thank You! Your web site, research and recommendations were a wonderful experience for us to learn to rely on that service. I will recommend your site to everyone and WILL use it again.

Villa Cinque Terra - this place was simply delightful. The staff were incredibly
nice and helpful. They even upgraded our reservation as they had an opening.
The rooms were clean, spacious and in a great location across from the sea.
I noticed that a number of good hotels in this town did not have ocean views,
so I felt this was very special. By far the best breakfast spread (my kids
thought so too). We would return here in a heartbeat.

It's hard to readjust after a wonderful, but all too short and busy a trip to Italy.
The trip was a great success, in particular due to the excellent accommodations
and their locations related to planned activities. There were no disappointments,
but rather pleasant surprises with lodgings booked.
Villa Cinque Terre
Indeed a little gem. New, bright with great rooms, and in our case sea front
balcony. Wonderful breakfasts in a first class dining area, or on the terrace.
Although on the main, but small, sea front road, traffic is mainly pedestrian
and nights are quiet. Parking reservation is a must if arriving by car. We
thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and very friendly staff tried their best to assist,
although english is limited. Micki's restaurant was a great experience, but
over-priced. Better value can be found in smaller places. We are glad to have
chosen Cinque Terre, with its great hiking trails, as a stop. A great boat
trip by high-speed boat to Portofino with stops along the way is offered between
June and Sept by Consorzio Marittimo Touristico, three times a week. A 3-hr
stop in Portofino allows sufficient time to explore this beautiful town, with
perhaps a harbour-side lunch at restaurant 'Tripoli'. Also offer seasonal trips
to Genoa.
Your service and follow up was much appreciated. We hope to explore other regions
of Italy in future and would look forward for In Italy to assist us again.

We had a wonderful time at Villa Cinque Terre. There is a young woman at the front desk (I believe her name was Madeleine) who spoke English and was very helpful and such a sweet young lady. I want to stress what an asset she is to the hotel. The breakfasts were very good and the display and table settings was very nice. They even had some packaged food to take on your hikes. The rooms were very clean and the beds comfortable. The thing that impressed me the most was how clean everything was. We didn't like the parking lot being the biggest view from our balcony though. If anyone is doing the hiking trails, I would suggest that they start from Riomaggiore and go towards Monterosso because going the other direction is alot more difficult. The views are incredible and well worth the time to do them. I am 56 years old and if I can do them, so can anyone else. It was a very pleasant experience and I would recommend Villa Cinque Terre to others.

Dear Jessica,
I enjoyed my stay in Italy in Monterosso al Mare. The hotel was very pleasant
and near the beaches. I enjoyed hiking on the well-marked trails where there
were wonderful views of the other town in Cing Terre. Also, the food, especially
the seafood, was excellent. My suggestion would be to inform potential tourists
of the small ferries that run between the towns of Cing Terres, as those
rides provide additional vistas and are the easiest way to visit the other
very
different towns. All-in-all, I would recommend this region of Italy to my friends.

Our trip to the Cinque Terre area was outstanding !!! The place exceeded all our expectations ........... The Villa Cinque Terre in particular was a perfect place to stay. Very well located, extremely clean and the people were very friendly. You were right that this is a place to walk. We parked the car upon arrival and didn't touch it until we left. We enjoyed taking the local train from Monterrosso al Mare to Riomaggiore (at the other end of Cinque Terre area - about 20 min for 5 euros -) and walking back about half way, overlooking the sea all the time. It was a wonderful time which I wish others can experience .........

The Villa Cinque Terre was fabulous.....the facility was beautiful, clean, all the conveniences, a great view and beautifully decorated...the breakfasts were great.......but the best of all was the staff...they were so gracious and went out of their way to be sure that we had an enjoyable stay....they were just great...especially a young lady named Elena..... It's a 10 on a scale of 10.
I would go back again and again and again.
