Character: Whimsical details at this waterfront boutique hotel.
Advantages: Simply put, this is the nicest hotel in the Cinque Terre.
Location: In Monterosso al Mare, right in front of the little fishing harbor and an equipped beach. The train station and the rest of the town are ten minutes' walk away, as are the famous trails that thousands of visitors come to hike. Two excellent restaurants are around the corner, and best of all, you can drive right up to the hotel without having to face the parking problems mentioned below. We have been looking for this little gem for years! Until we found it, we had several reasons for discouraging our readers from actually staying in the Five Towns - Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso al Mare, Riomaggiore and Vernazza: hard to get there, traffic jams and parking nightmares and, above all, woefully overpriced and below standard hotels. But the 11 guestrooms in this charming villa are a wonderful exception. Simple yet inviting and comfortable, newly refurbished, they offer views of the spectacular coast and the sea, or of the quiet private garden. The owners are kind and enthusiastic, and eager to share their little slice of heaven with the lucky travelers who manage to reserve their stay here. |

The local train stops about 600 yards from the hotel, so you do not need a car to stay here.

| Rooms: |
Only 11, on three floors. Singles and standard doubles have garden
views; deluxe doubles have balconies and sea view (those on the upper
floors are unobstructed views, while those on the lower floor are
partially obstructed by trees); the one junior suite has a double bed
and a fold-out bed for one child, as well as a balcony with sea view
and another with a spectacular view of the Cinque Terre. All have ample
wardrobe space, marble floors and cheerful modern bathrooms decorated
in a nautical theme. The hotel does have triple rooms but they are
strictly for two adults and one child. Non-smoking rooms are available. |
