Just 7 km north of Como lie the jewel-like towns of Cernobbio and Moltrasio. This latter lakeside enclave (pronounced Mol-traz-yo) is famed for its spectacular waterfall, fed by the snows that melt in the Alps overhead. At the lake level, it's a sub-tropical paradise with huge flowering shrubs, trees and bushes almost year-round. The composer Giacomo Bellini loved it so much that he was inspired to write La Sonnambula and Lo Straniero by its unforgettable views. Although this venerable old hotel was only built later, in 1920, it looks like many of the grand villas that have added their beauty to Lake Como for centuries, and its staff is waiting to give you the warmest welcome the lake can offer.

Location: In Moltrasio, 2 km from Cernobbio and 7 km from Como, on the western side of the lake with views of Bellagio. Click here to see a map.   Public transportation: The lake steamers from Como and Varenna stop right in front of the hotel. But don't worry, they have silent electric engines! If you are arriving from Malpensa, a bus goes to Como several times a day, and it stops right in front of the steamer dock. From Milan, you can take a train to Como or Varenna, then take the steamer.   Rooms: 100 in the hotel, including classic, superior and deluxe doubles. Most have wall-to-wall carpet. Classic rooms face Mt. Bisbino and the village, while superior and deluxe rooms face the lake. Deluxe rooms in the hotel are newly remodeled and on the fifth floor. There are a very few connecting rooms. In front of the hotel is the charming 19th-century villa (in the center of the picture at left), which is extremely popular, so book well in advance! Deluxe rooms here have king-size beds, lake view and balcony. Non-smoking rooms are available.   Features: Air conditioning, double-glazed windows, color satellite TV, direct-dial telephone with high-speed DSL connection, safe, and mini-bar. Electrical adaptors and plugs, iron and ironing board, extra pillows and a tea kettle are available on request. Each room has a private bathroom with bathtub and wall shower, hair dryer and courtesy set.   Facilities: Elevator; American buffet breakfast; tennis courts (equipment available on request); swimming pool open May 15-Sept. 15; very well-equipped gym; complimentary sauna; two restaurants open 7 days a week; indoor coffee bar; room service until midnight; free outdoor parking or indoor parking at 18 Euro/night.
