Gran Duca di York Hotel

This lovely Liberty-style building originally provided housing for the priests who were attached to the Duomo, which is only a few steps away. One of these was the Cardinal of Milan, who later became Pope Pius XI. The lobby has a neo-classical tone, with columns and marble floors, statues and trompe l’oeil frescoes. It also has a cozy little cocktail area where a friendly barman serves drinks and snacks. In a bustling city that can often feel impersonal, it’s nice to have a “home” to retreat to in the evening, perhaps to enjoy an aperitif before you step out for dinner.

Location: On Via Moneta, just behind the Duomo and only a few blocks from La Scala and Brera. Definitely the best location in town because it is as central as they come, but in a pedestrian area so it’s very quiet. Click here to see a map.

Public transportation: Because of the very strict traffic regulations, we do not suggest you drive to the hotel; but if you do, you can park two blocks away for 25-30 Euro/night. For sightseeing in the city, use the red line subway and get off at the Cordusio stop, which is one block away.

Rooms:

33, on three floors. All rooms are decorated with very pretty yellow-and-white wallpaper, sisal carpets and neutral upholstery on simple but good furniture. Some rooms have an armchair and table, most have a desk, and a few open onto the second-floor terrace. Strictly speaking, these are not rooms with balconies: they open onto an area that is shared with other rooms and overlooks the street below. Because the hotel is so small and has many guests who have been coming here several times a year for decades, it is extremely difficult to get balcony rooms and we really do not recommend them anyway. Other rooms overlook the central courtyard, but all rooms at this hotel are quiet because there is hardly any vehicular or foot traffic. All rooms have a private modern bathroom with stall shower or bathtub. There are no triple rooms in this hotel.

Features: Air conditioning, telephone with separate modem plug (on request), satellite TV, mini-bar with complimentary soft drinks, safe, full-length mirror, feather pillows, hair dryer, magnifying mirror.

Facilities: Elevator, cocktail bar, nearby parking for approx. 26 Euro/day.
