Character: Fun, funky Pop Art furnishings in one of Florence's most beautiful squares. Advantages: Very clean rooms, friendly staff, very affordable. Location: Two blocks from the main train station, so you can easily walk, even if you have luggage. After that, it's a 5-to-15-minute walk to everything in Florence. Click here to see the map for Hotel Universo. The owners of this newly renovated hotel really had fun decorating it, with bright cheerfully colored furnishings against gray walls and dark floors. The final result is calming and uplifting at the same time. Anyone who enjoys thinking out of the box while being right in the middle of everything and keeping costs to a minimum will be thrilled to make this their Florentine home from home.

Rooms: 44 rooms, including singles, doubles, triples, and two quads. Double rooms have king-size beds or two single beds. All rooms have gray stone walls, wood floors, top quality linens, a desk and sparse but brand-new furnishings. Twenty rooms, including superior doubles and triples, as well as both quad rooms, have views of the piazza and the beautiful façade of Santa Maria Novella. The quad rooms are excellent, with plenty of room for a queen bed and two twin beds, or for four twin beds. There are no connecting rooms, but the entire hotel is non-smoking.             Features: Air conditioning, double-glazed windows, flat-screen satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, paid wireless Internet access, mini-bar, and safe. All bathrooms have stall showers and hair dryers.             Facilities: Elevator; coffee bar; paid Internet point; paid garage parking nearby (but we do not recommend having a car at this location).
