Hotel La Rovere

We have been searching for this hotel for years now, because it's exactly what you want: a small, charming inn with a historical flavor and friendly management, just a few yards from St. Peter's and right across the river from the Baroque center of the city. Although it's right in the heart of town, it has none of that impersonal "business hotel" atmosphere that we so often encounter, and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to stay in one of the newly renovated rooms, either.

Location: On Vicolo Sant'Onofrio, right down the hill from St. Peter's. Unlike the ugly modern streets created around the Vatican by Mussolini, this is a steep alley lined with typical Roman apartment houses, and it has a real neighborhood feel to it. Besides that, the street has only local traffic, so it's very quiet, for central Rome! The city's large underground parking lot is 50 yards away, and many buses stop at the end of the block on their way to all the major attractions. You can walk to Piazza Navona in 15 minutes. Rooms: Only 25! All the rooms were renovated last year, with wall-to-wall carpeting and good quality furniture. Superior rooms are on the first and third floor and have rustic wood-beamed ceilings and great views of the ancient rooftops or the Tiber River and Castel Sant'Angelo. Three superior rooms have private terraces.

Features: All the rooms have double-glazed windows, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, mini-bar, safe, satellite TV, and a private tile bathroom with hair dryer, and towel warmer, and stall shower.

Facilities: Elevator, public parking one block away in the municipal lot, breakfast room, Internet point.
