We were enchanted when we visited this small lakeside hotel, which overlooks a tiny cove where half a dozen fishermen sat on their boats actually repairing their nets. A scene as tranquil and authentic as this is not a usual site on Lake Como, one of the world's most famous resort destinations, so we stood and chatted with the men for a few minutes and learned that the calm waters between this shore and the forested peninsula about 150 yards away are considered the best spot to catch the fish that wind up on many local tables in the evening. Needless to say, the hotel that lends its little beach to these humble boats gets the first choice of the catch!

Location: In Lenno, a minuscule town directly across from Bellagio, just below Varenna and Tremezzo, 27 km from Como city and 76 km from Milan. Click here to see a map.     Public transportation: The lake steamers from Como and Varenna stop 50 yards from the hotel. But don't worry, they have silent electric engines! From Milan, you can take a train to Como or Varenna, then take the steamer.     Rooms: 46 rooms, including doubles, triples, and quads. Double rooms have king-size beds. Triples and quads have a queen-size bed and a single or double sleep sofa. There are also four "apartments" on the ground and first floor. They consist of one very large room with one queen bed, two single beds and one single sleepsofa, plus a bathroom with shower. The ones on the first floor also have partial lake view. Only the 11 attic rooms have twin beds; the rooms are very spacious and have sloping ceilings but no lake view. All the other rooms have lake view. Every room is nicely furnished with simple but comfortable furniture. Many lake view rooms have small private balconies.     Features: Air conditioning, double-glazed windows, color satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, mini-bar, and safe. Bathrooms have stall showers, many of which are massage showers, and hair dryers.     Facilities: Elevator; swimming pool; sauna; restaurant facing the lake; coffee bar; room service; free outdoor parking; mooring for motorboats.
