For decades, this recently-renovated hotel has been offering genteel hospitality right on the shore of Lake Como. Its location in the heart of the little town of Menaggio makes it possible to walk out to several restaurants for dinner, ranging from casual to elegant. As you stroll along the well-kept lakeside promenade, you will pass a dozen magnificent historical villas, many of whose gardens are renowned throughout the world. All around you is an explosion of sweet-smelling flowers, but lift your eyes across the deep-blue lake and you'll see the snow-capped Alps. It truly is Shangri-La, and Menaggio is a perfectly situated base for visiting all its many wonders.

Public Transportation: The lake steamers from Como and Varenna stop right in front of the hotel. But don't worry, they have silent electric engines! If you are arriving from Malpensa, there is a bus to Menaggio once a day, and it stops right in back of the hotel. From Milan, you can take a train to Como or Varenna, then take the steamer.         Rooms: 87 rooms, including singles, standard doubles with street or lake view, superior doubles, superior triples, standard or superior quads. Rooms that face the street may be noisy if you sleep with open windows. Superior quads have a living room with a daybed and single bed, bathroom with whirlpool tub, steps up to a loft bedroom with double bed, and lake views from the balcony only. Standard quads have adjoining double rooms with one bathroom. All rooms are large, and nicely furnished with simple but comfortable furniture and wall-to-wall carpet. Many lake view rooms have small private balconies.         Features: Soundproofing, air conditioning, double-glazed windows, color satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, mini-bar, safe. Bathrooms have stall showers or bathtubs, and hair dryers.
