Napoli Storico Hotel

This small, charming hotel occupies a 19th-century mansion that belonged to a wealthy and very eccentric Neapolitan nobleman. For centuries, his family had owned a vast monastery on this spot, and after it – as well as most of the country’s convents and monasteries – was shut down following the Neapolitan invasion and French take-over of the Papal States and southern Italy, it had slowly fallen into a sorrow state of disrepair. The Marquis changed all that by having marble floors put in throughout, by having monumental doors and windows installed, and by emblazoning it all with his aristocratic coat of arms. All these embellishments, and many more that have been added in the last 120 years, bear witness to the mansion’s illustrious past. Since 2003, it has been a gracious boutique hotel hidden inside a nondescript apartment compound and surrounded by its own lush garden with a relaxing swimming pool at its heart.

Location: Right behind Piazza Bellini, which is in the center of the most historic part of Naples. All the major churches, the shopping streets and the lively open-air markets are within a few minutes’ walk, and the docks and train station are a very short cab ride away. Click here for a map.

Public transportation: The most efficient and safest forms of public transportation are the subway (metropolitana), city trains and cable cars (funicolare – which take you to the upper part of the City, called Vomero). They all stop within 5-10 minutes of the hotel.

Rooms: Only 19, including 13 double rooms and 6 junior suites. Some rooms face the garden and the swimming pool; others are on the third floor facing a rooftop terrace. All have parquet or marble floors, beamed ceilings and very nice modern furniture. Some junior suites have a sitting room with sleep sofa below and a sleep loft with queen bed and en suite bathroom above. All double rooms can have one queen bed or two twin beds; most of the junior suites have a queen canopy bed and a single sleep sofa. Each room has a private marble or mosaic bathroom with stall shower or bathtub with wall shower. One, which has a Roman tub, connects to a single room. There are some connecting double rooms and some connecting junior suite/double rooms.

Features: Air conditioning, good wardrobes and dressers, central heating, direct-dial telephone with free DSL line, safe big enough for a laptop, satellite TV, DVD machine and lending library with movies in English, mini bar, luggage stand, bathroom with robes, slippers and hair dryer.

Facilities: Swimming pool, Internet point, 24-hour room service, excellent American buffet breakfast, cocktail bar, valet parking (costs 25 Euro/day).
