Antico Palazzo di Roma

This very historical hotel opened to the public in mid 2001. It occupies a 17th-century palace called Palazzo Imperiali Borromeo. Since it is now in the heart of the city, you will find it hard to believe that this was the "summer residence" of the family who owned the Quirinale, the building that eventually became the residence of the Popes and is now the Presidential Palace. Since there were Popes in the family, the building even contains a “chapel,” which is actually a full-blown 18th-century church with a beautiful sunburst altar that rivals any other in Rome. Ask to see this secret masterpiece - as a guest of the hotel you are welcome to walk through it. Elsewhere in the hotel, the renovations completed in 2001 reveal the owners' decision not to eliminate any of the original architectural features. Beautiful stuccos and marbles are everywhere to delight the artistically and historically minded visitor.

Location: Inside the ancient walls, on Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore. Ten minutes walk to the train station, Via Nazionale or the Colisseum. Via Veneto and the Spanish Steps are about a 25-minute walk away. Although right on the main route of Rome's many tourist attractions (a Tourist Board kiosk is just across the street), this neighborhood is really a residential one and has many shops, department stores and restaurants frequented by Romans. Only a few blocks away is the newly rebuilt Piazza Vittoria, the city's largest outdoor market. Click here to see a map.

Public transportation: The A line subway stops about 10 minutes walk away and goes directly to St. Peter's. Many buses also stop on the square.

Rooms: 40, including triple, double and single rooms. All rooms have a very "Tuscan" feel, with their wood floors, whitewashed walls and antique-style furniture. Some rooms overlook Santa Maria Maggiore, next door. Every room has a very nice private bathroom.

Features: All rooms have air-conditioning, direct-dial telephone, amazing soundproofed windows, satellite TV, safe, mini-bar, luggage rack. Bathrooms have excellent showers or bathtubs with glass partitions, and hair dryer.

Facilities: Elevator; breakfast room; beverage service in the two inner courtyards; Internet point. Garage parking is available nearby (25-40 Euro/night).
