Hotel Quirinale

For anyone who wants to experience what it was like to sojourn in a grand European hotel in the 19 th century, this is one of the most lovingly maintained examples we have encountered. Step off the busy central Roman street and through the swinging doors and you are immediately immersed in another, more refined age. In the elegant grand salon, it almost seems possible to envision ladies wearing lacy gowns and picture hats sipping tea and chatting quietly with gentlemen in dove grey frock coats. Had you stopped in here during the 1950s and 1960s you were most likely to run into Maria Callas, who had her own suite with a secret door that went straight into the Opera House next door. If it’s ultra-modern sleek you desire, this is not the place for you. But if you wish your lodgings to be as historic as the city you’re visiting, then this hotel is certain to be your Roman dream come true.

Location: On Via Nazionale, between the Termini rail station and the Spanish Steps. Walk to Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona in 10-20 minutes; St. Peter's and Ancient Rome are only a few minutes by subway, which stops two blocks from the hotel. Click here to see a map.

Rooms: 200 on five floors, including singles, doubles and triples. Although there are elevators, you may be tempted to use the imposing marble staircase. Most of the rooms are large, and all are furnished with authentic Empire-style antiques. Floors are either dark parquet or smooth marble. Some of the rooms overlook the central courtyard or the rear of the hotel: these are generally quieter. The hotel has some connecting rooms and there are a very few premium suites, featuring a living room between two double rooms with en suite bathrooms. There are non-smoking rooms.

Features: All the rooms have double-glazed windows, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, mini-bar, satellite TV, pay TV, TV-Internet, large closets with wall safe, clothes press and full-length mirror, and a private bathroom with marble floor, bathtub, hair dryer, good make-up lights, and (in superior rooms) terrycloth bathrobes.

Facilities: Elevators; full American buffet breakfast; Internet point and Wi-Fi in the lobby; gourmet restaurant that moves out to the leafy courtyard in warmer months; parking available nearby (30 Euro/night).
