To those who wish to visit both Portofino and the Cinqueterre, we offer this helpful hint: consider staying in Rapallo. A delightful resort town that lies just 15 minutes south of Genoa, it offers myriad holiday services within the context of a truly authentic Italian town. Unlike overpriced Portofino and the under-serviced Cinque Terre, Rapallo offers a wide range of restaurants from the simplest to the 5-star gourmet, and endless shopping opportunities that include souvenirs as well as the bargains Italians purchase for themselves. When your sightseeing day is done, join the locals for a stroll down the seafront promenade. Here you'll see Gennarino, an elegant grey heron, strutting through the tides in search of his dinner. As the sun sets and the evening star appears over the lush wooded promontory that marks the culmination of this classic Italian bay, you will undoubtedly understand the magic that has made this a world-class destination for discriminating travelers.

Location: In Rapallo, a lively seaside resort town that is 9 km from Portofino and 37 km from Monterosso. The train station and the docks are less than five minutes’ walk from the hotel and you can visit all towns between Genoa and La Spezia using either of these (boats are more limited than the train). It is also right off the A12 autostrada. Click here to see a map.   Rooms: 30. Each floor has one standard room, two superior rooms, two deluxe rooms and one junior suite. Rooms are sunny and bright and have double-glazed windows or sliding doors. All have tile or carpet or parquet floors, single sofa with an extra pull-out bed, desk and chair, and private bathroom. Standard rooms have no view, but they are large and L-shaped and perfect for a family with two small children. Superior rooms have a lovely view of the water and the Ligurian hills. Deluxe rooms and junior suites have a small balcony, big enough to sit on and enjoy the views of the marina and harbor. The Family Suite is on the top floor: it is basically an apartment with a large living room; kitchenette with dishwasher, microwave, gas burners and fridge; panoramic dining room; big shaded terrace with dining table and chairs (both these rooms overlook the entire bay); one queen bedroom on the rear with lots of wardrobes and en suite bathroom with ultra-modern whirlpool featuring chromotherapy and aromatherary; one twin bedroom that opens onto the terrace and has a bathroom with stall shower. For a family or even two couples, this is one of the nicest and best bargains in the whole area. There are no wheelchair accessible rooms in the hotel but non-smoking rooms are available.   Features: Air conditioning, flat-screen color satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, mini-bar, safe big enough for a laptop, wireless Internet connection. Bathrooms have a bathtub with wall shower or handheld shower, hair dryer and full-length mirror.   Facilities: Elevator; Internet point; excellent American buffet breakfast with fresh juice and breads, overlooking the harbor; parking across the street (6 to 10 Euro/night); in summer, hotel guests may use the private bathing beach across the street for discounted rates.
