There is so much history within the walls of this well-known hotel! Even the most unpracticed eye can immediately tell that it began life in the 19th century as the home of local aristocracy, when ladies' afternoon tea might have looked like a Renoir tableau. The family fell upon harder times during World War II and sold it to Lord Acton -- one of the richest and most sophisticated connoisseurs of Florence -- who gave it to his longtime friend Signora Beacci, who left it to her oh-so-fortunate heirs. The Grand Salon, where you are welcome to read your morning paper over tea or cappuccino, is exactly as it was in 1917, right down to the priceless ancient tapestry on the wall. More than a hotel, this exquisite jewel is truly a delightful warren of rooms furnished in that very Tuscan way that seems totally accidental but actually results from centuries of inherited fine taste. And since it is on the top floors of a venerable old palazzo, sunlight streams through every one of the countless windows, and blesses the colorful flowers growing on the terrace where you will take your breakfast. In such a paradise, is it any wonder that almost everyone on the staff has been here for years and years? You won't want to leave either!

Rooms: 41, on the 3rd and 4th floor of an elevator building. Because each floor has several winding hallways, you never feel as if there are more than half a dozen rooms in this hotel! There is no traditional lobby, but everywhere you look there is another sitting room or lounge, or the elegant cocktail bar. All guestrooms have the original parquet floors, high ceilings, and big windows. Furnishings are the beautiful 19th-century antiques favored by the upper-class British travelers who loved to stay here. Many rooms have window screens and stunning views (and we always try to get these rooms for our guests). Non-smoking rooms are available.

Features: Every room has direct-dial telephone, air conditioning, satellite TV, luggage rack, safe big enough for a laptop, and mini-bar. The marble bathrooms feature courtesy sets, hair dryer, and bathtub with glass door and wall shower.

Facilities: Elevator, wireless access in the sitting rooms. Buffet breakfast can be taken on the roof garden or in the sunny breakfast room. It is not convenient to stay at this hotel with a car, but parking is available nearby for about 26 Euro/night.
