Villa dell'Artista

It would be natural to describe this property as a delightful Tuscan hotel. But the word "hotel" cannot do justice to this magical spot! It is more like a stately country home with a gracious staff ready to pamper you throughout your vacation. Indeed, one might go so far as to say that this isn't even a home: it is nothing less than a work of art! This quiet mansion truly is the "house of the artist," a local one named Giulio Greco, who has left his mark on every surface you'll see. Rooms here don't have a number, they have a name such as Grapevine, Olive Tree and The Robin, each corresponding to a charming painting above the door. Inside that door you'll find faux-finished walls in relaxing pastel shades, complemented by wistful decorations and trompe l'oeil landscapes. The rooms are big enough to allow for relaxation in private, but there are also countless shared spaces where you can meet your fellow guests, perhaps in the sunny reading room, or by the glamorous swimming pool, beneath the centuries-old trees that shade the vast garden, or in the cozy Gambasinus Restaurant (where local delicacies ebb and flow with the fresh seasonal foods for which Tuscany is famous).

This little oasis, located halfway between Florence and Siena, just down the road from San Gimignano, has only 10 rooms, including 6 with queen beds, 2 with twin beds and 2 singles. Two of the queen bedrooms can accommodate a third (single) bed and one room can hold up to two extra beds. Each room is spacious and bright, furnished with authentic antiques from the 19th-century era when the house was built. The private bathrooms were all designed in the Old English style, yet they have modern fittings, hair dryers and universal current plugs, as well as nice courtesy sets and slippers. The soundproofed rooms are reached by elevator and offer air conditioning, satellite TV, direct-dial telephone with ISDN line, radio, mini-bar, safe, orthopedic mattresses and electronic keys.

Villa dell'Artista enjoys a fabulous location for day trips, being less than an hour from Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Florence. Montepulciano, Cortona and the Cinque Terre are about 90 minutes away. Just beyond San Gimignano is our favorite Tuscan town, Volterra, and beyond that is the pristine coast, with its pine forests, sandy beaches and rocky coves. After a full day of experiencing Tuscany, you can come home for a swim or an apertif before enjoying a delicious dinner in the restaurant. And on evenings when you might wish to try a different eatery, the little town of Gambassi is less than a five-minute walk away. It is here that you will find Villa dell'Artista's final amenity: its small but pleasant beauty center.
