There is an area directly between Rome and Tuscany called La Tuscia. Characterized by gently rolling hills, distant blue-grey mountains, sparkling lakes, incredibly ancient Etruscan ruins and minuscule forgotten hill towns, it instantly wins the heart of everyone who visits. Best of all, this region is almost entirely unknown to mass tourism. Never will you see platoons of tour buses parked along the roadside or entire town streets lined with souvenir shops selling ugly trinkets at ridiculous prices. What you will see in Tuscia are gracious farmhouses surrounded by brilliant green fields, grazing sheep and sweet local residents who take the greatest pride in showing you their homeland.
La Tuscia offers endless possibilities for fascinating day trips. Perhaps the closest is Sutri, one of the most enchanting Etruscan ruins. Also very nearby is glorious Viterbo, one of the loveliest towns in Italy: because it was long a favorite country home for the Popes, it harbors numerous marvelous churches and papal palaces within its picturesque medieval walls. Still under an hour's drive are other renowned Etruscan sites: Tarquinia, Cerveteri and Vulci come to mind. Garden lovers will not want to miss the extravagant estates at Bomarzo, Bagnaia and Caprarola; and for fans of beautiful nature there are Lakes Bolsena and Vico, the pristine beaches of Latium and the nature parks of Lamone and Rureno. And that's not all. You can simply use La Tuscia as a base for your visits to Rome: it's only 45 km. away, reached in under an hour by convenient train service which stops only ten minutes from this historic B&B just outside Capranica. Between the two lakes and just off the ancient Roman road, la Cassia, it entirely occupies a large stone farmhouse that offers stunning views across the valley from the outdoor patio where breakfast is served in warmer months. Inside there is a large kitchen where the original marble sink sits alongside state-of-the-art modern appliances and a big dining table, beneath the original wooden ceilings.
Your host Giuseppe, who speaks good English after a lifetime spent living abroad in his country's diplomatic service, has furnished his country home with exquisite taste. Heavy wooden antique dressers, armoires and tables are complemented by wrought-iron beds covered with handmade quilts. Fresh flowers and antique prints are everywhere, in the guestrooms and in the comfortable sitting room where you can watch TV, read or chat in front of the fireplace.
B&B La Tuscia is cozy and inviting, with two guestrooms, an apartment and a separate house. Ada has either two twin beds or one king-sized bed, large armoire and en suite bathroom with shower. Letizia has two twin beds and very pretty views, plus a private bathroom with shower. Either of these rooms can have a third bed for a child, and both have a mini-fridge where you can store snacks and drinks. Lara is the name of the apartment. Its double bedroom has wonderful views from its two windows, plus two full-sized beds, a large armoire, and an en suite bathroom with shower. Completing the apartment are a bedroom with twin beds, a second bathroom with shower, a living room with TV and kitchenette (mini-fridge, burners, dishwasher and sink), and a private garden.
Cristina is a mini-apartment that occupies a small house next to the main building. It has a lovely patio facing the garden, and inside it measures 430 square feet. There is a living room with two sofas, dining table and furnished kitchenette (mini-fridge, oven, burners, and the original hearth and sink), plus two double bedrooms with queen-sized beds, and a bathroom with shower and tub.
The many windows at the B&B are double-glazed, and the entire house is heated extremely well. In warmer months, guests can enjoy a delicious evening meal (must be reserved in advance) on the flowering patio. Completing this tranquil vacation retreat are an 18 X 36-foot swimming pool (open June 15-September 15), a laundry room with washing machine and iron, a barbecue, a children's playground, and a well-equipped fitness center.
