Castello Rosso
Centro Benessere

As its name implies, this state-of-the-art health spa resides in a 16th-century red castle. The health benefits start with the peaceful setting. Surrounded by a large park and nestled in the foothills of Piedmont, it is near the wine country of Asti and the truffle capital of Alba. To get there, you drive past an ocean of kiwi plantations, heading straight for the mountains of Val D'Aosta, backed on the horizon by the French Alps themselves. You pass the delightful medieval village of Saluzzo, one of Italy's most undeserving overlooked treasures, then you drive right through the tiny hamlet of Costigliole, to the fortress at very top of the hill. In ancient Roman days this part of the world was a busy crossroads. At the end of the 1400s it was home to local nobility who were more loyal to the French court than to any Italian rulers, which is why the Savoys destroyed the castle soon after Hans Clemer painted the masterful fresco that still survives on a second-floor wall. Rebuilt in 1625, Castello Rosso is now a perfect combination of strategic location and off-the-beaten-track tranquility. Pollution is unheard of, and the microclimate is such that mild temperatures prevail most of the year.

How many hotels have you stayed at that possess a centuries-old wing called La torre del pensiero (The Tower of Thought)? That's not all you'll find to fascinate you here. There's the Coat of Arms Gallery, the well-marked hiking trails, one-of-a-kind swimming pool and medicinal herb shop.

Then there's the health and beauty center, reached by elevator directly from the guest rooms. Its ultra-modern facilities and ageold techniques blend to create a holistic environment that will help you "listen to your body's messages." Treatments include Shiatsu and other types of massage, yoga, meditation, reflexology, hydromassage, Turkish baths, bio-feedback, hypnosis and other relaxation therapies, as well as facial and body beauty treatments. There are also special programs, including those to help curb smoking. Naturally, every service offered at Castello Rosso is performed by highly trained professionals specialized in the holistic approach to healing.

Although the property and the castle are spacious, they are never crowded, because the hotel offers only thirteen rooms and three deluxe rooms. Each has direct-dial telephone, satellite TV, air conditioning, desk set, wall safe, and a private bathroom with hair dryer, terrycloth robes and towels, slippers, and a lovely toiletry set from the spa. Furnishings are antique in the deluxe rooms, sleek Italian modern in the standard rooms, and there are many small touches that will make you feel right at home. Sunlight streams in through abundant windows, high ceilings add to the spaciousness of each room, and tranquility oozes in from the surrounding park.

There is one more jewel in Castello Rosso's crown: its excellent restaurant. You'll have trouble believing the local specialties served in the cozy dining room or on the patio under white market umbrellas are part of a low-calorie, high-energy diet, but you won't doubt they are prepared using only the very freshest, organically grown produce, fish and meats. And since a lapse into temporary naughtiness is an integral part of any spa stay, you can balance out those delicious meals with a brief excursion just down the road to Barolo, or slightly farther to Le Langhe, home of some of Italy's most illustrious wines and culinary extravaganzas.
