This exquisite property dates back to the 17th century. Its present owners bought it a few years back and called upon the ageold skills of countless local artisans to return it to its original glory. This is truly one of the most impressive restoration jobs we have seen, and the result is a level of artistry that merits the title "relais," denoting a hostelry of superior quality. The external architecture remains as it was, with its austere plaster walls, irregularly placed windows, brick arches, and doorways surrounded by the indigenous pietra serena. Inside, the characteristics of a bygone age have also been retained, with walls in lime plaster, brick ceilings supported on chestnut beams, floors lined with terracotta, original wooden doors and fittings. Equally worthy of the eminent family who first lived here are the priceless fabrics, antiques, china, crystal, gilded mirrors and accessories that abound, complemented by period colours, patterns and decorations. The result of all this attention to detail is an intimate hotel combining Tuscan décor, historical character and a tranquil atmosphere conducive to an unforgettable holiday.
The public rooms on the ground floor include a comfortable, welcoming lounge where you can relax by the original fireplaces, perhaps while enjoying a drink from the well-stocked bar. In the elegant dining room, you'll start your day with a generous buffet breakfast of fresh fruits, delicious homemade breads and pastries, as well as international staples, also by the fire. During warmer months, breakfast is served on the terrace in the shade of centuries-old trees. After your sightseeing is done, you'll want to relax by the 50x30-foot swimming pool, take a few shots on the driving range, or wander along the footpaths in the nearby woods. After dinner, perhaps in nearby Cortona, you can step into the tasting room for an aperitif or cordial chosen from the quality list of wines and spirits.
Only fifteen bedrooms have evolved out of the restoration so far. On the ground floor are two classic doubles, one of which is wheelchair accessible and has its own entrance from the garden. On the first floor, reached by elevator, are two deluxe doubles (one with Cortona views and the other with park views), a junior suite with park views and a classic double with Cortona views. On the second floor there are one classic double with Cortona views, one deluxe double with park views, and two junior suites with Cortona views. Each room boasts totally unique size, shape and decorations, but all are elegantly furnished with vintage dressers, four-poster beds, framed portraits and carefully chosen fabrics that add to the beauty and atmosphere of the villa. Every bedroom has colour satellite television, mini-bar and safe, cleverly hidden in wall niches. There are also air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, and wireless Internet access. The large private bathrooms have hair dryers and a massage shower; the junior suites in the guesthouse and on the second floor have a whirlpool bathtub. Families with more than one child can request a junior suite and deluxe double on the second floor, which have connecting doors.
Offering all the same amenities, as well as separate entrances from the garden, are the rooms in the annex (one classic double; plus two deluxe doubles, each with a double bedroom and a loft with single bed). Rounding out the accommodations is the guesthouse, which is perfect for two couples or a family of four adults. It has two gorgeous junior suites with whirlpool bathtubs, one with Cortona views and the other with park views.
Whether or not your room has views of Cortona, you can see it from anywhere on the grounds, spread out across the hillside only 1 km away. Reached from the villa in just a few minutes, it is one of the villages that best represent the region of Tuscany. You will want to save plenty of time for its medieval lanes, Etruscan walls and Renaissance palaces, made famous by Frances Mayes in Under the Tuscan Sun. Because it offers an unusually large selection of eateries, you will never have to drive far at all for your evening meals. When it finally comes time to leave, we wager you'll do it with a heavy heart - and this will be one of those places you'll recommend only to your closest friends as a very special favour.
