Palazzo Dragoni

Palazzo Dragoni is a 14th-century palazzo located in the very heart of Spoleto. Overlooking the town's historic piazza and its deep green valley, this is one of the most prestigious private residences in Umbria that offer accommodations. Its owners always provide a very warm welcome to guests, who tend to become very attached to the hotel and its staff. If you peek into the guest book, you'll see the names of people from all around the globe, including many well-known artists who have performed at Spoleto's renowned Festival of Two Worlds.

It has been said that you need a guided tour to fully understand all the charms of Palazzo Dragoni. Most of the 16 rooms are suites, and each is entirely unique. After all, if you were going to build a fabulous town house for your family, would you make all the rooms look the same? Only modern hotels strive for that dubious honor. Here, the bathrooms are spacious and offer hair dryers, heated terrycloth towels, slippers, tubs and showers with glass doors; the bedrooms are tastefully decorated with antiques and feature satellite TV, direct-dial telephones and mini-bars. Many have wide French doors or balconies which allow the sunlight to stream in. The double suite has two connecting double rooms with two bathrooms (no sitting room).

Breakfast is a special treat at Palazzo Dragoni. First, it is served in the stunning dining room, recreated from an ancient belvedere. Through its plateglass picture windows you'll have panoramic views of the valley, the cathedral and of castle which overlooks the town. Second, since the family which owns the hotel also runs Spoleto's best bakery, there are always delicious homemade cakes and pastries alongside the fresh fruit, cheese and cold cuts.

Below the ground floor, there is an ancient grotto which pre-dates the building, going back to Spoleto's Roman days. You'll want to explore the narrow alleys and picturesque piazzas of this Umbrian jewel, perhaps walking out to see the ancient aqueduct or taking a picnic lunch into the woods near the tiny abbey of Monteluco. Day trips abound, to the beautiful hill towns of Umbria, its lakes and famed valleys, or into the wine country of southern Tuscany.
