In the 1400s, when every town in Umbria was at war with every other, local feudal lords owed everything to the mercenaries who led their armies into battle. One of the most illustrious of these medieval generals was Pier Leone, who received an esteemed local palazzo from the grateful signore whose territories he saved. The home stayed in the same family for centuries, was magnificently restored during the 17th and 18th centuries, and today houses one of Umbria's most impressive hotels, Palazzo Bocci.
This beautiful residence is set right in the center of Spello, a delightfully picturesque medieval town with sweeping views across the valley from Perugia to Spoleto. It has twenty-three air-conditioned rooms and suites, each featuring a private bathroom (suites have whirpool tub), mini-bar, direct-dial telephone with DSL access, satellite color TV, pillow choices, screened windows and wall safe. The many public rooms, with frescoed ceilings and terracotta-tiled floors, are filled with comfortable antique furniture and include a bar and reading room. An excellent buffet breakfast is served here or in the delightful hanging garden and terrace, just outside, or order room service 24 hours a day.
You will be enchanted with the sight of Spello, an ochre necklace strung out at the top of a steep flowering hillside. Much of the original defensive wall still stands, as if to protect the many treasures inside. Perhaps the most memorable are the Pinturicchio frescoes which adorn the Baglioni Chapel in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Nearby are Collepino and San Giovanni, tiny medieval mountain villages that are as lovely as they are remote. Spello's location in central Umbria makes it perfect for day trips to Spoleto, Perugia, Orvieto, Deruta and Gubbio, and a most worthwhile day trip is the drive over Mount Subasio to visit the Eremo delle Carceri in Assisi.
No matter how far you venture during the day, you'll want to get home in time to have at least one dinner at Il Molino, the restaurant owned by Hotel Bocci. Directly across the street from the hotel, it has arching Roman walls and a roaring fireplace to welcome you. The famed Umbrian specialties are always a highlight of the menu.
