If you have ever wanted to stay in a castle, you will find very few opportunities as rewarding as this hilltop fortress. Built in 1163, it sits high on a tree-lined summit overlooking the Chiasco Valley, which provides the kind of picturesque landscape beloved by Leonardo and Perugino. As you wind your way up the private access road, you leave behind all signs -and sounds - of the 20th century. In just a few minutes you reach the castle keep, drive through the wrought-iron gates and park in the garage, which occupies the two-story former stables. The English-speaking butler will be waiting to take your bags and lead you upstairs to your room.
Before you get there, you will pass into the inner sanctum within the 1000-year-old ramparts: here you will find the same entirely self-sufficient universe that has existed for centuries at this castle. Every detail has been lovingly preserved, thanks to the devotion of your host Carlo and his very artistic wife. Accommodations are in tastefully-furnished rooms with private bath, mini-fridge, satellite TV, direct-dial telephone and daily cleaning. A handful of new junior suites also offer bathrooms with whirlpool tub and separate stall shower, air conditioning and DSL access. Suites have a sitting room with sleep sofa and a separate double bedroom. The deluxe is a larger room and has a private plunge pool. All the heavy antique furniture is crafted in the castle workshops, and family mementos abound, especially in the cozy living rooms of the suites, which have two rooms.
Perhaps the most unforgettable apartment is in the Tower: built in the year 1000, it has a living room, bath, double bedroom and terrace on no less than four floors. Although it does not provide as comfortable lodgings as the rooms in the main building, you are welcome to visit it, along with the rest of the castle, its park, forest and lawns. Everyone is urged to join their hosts and fellow guests for dinner in the candlelit dining room, where local specialties are served at a centuries-old communal table.
Surrounding the castle is the estate's ageold farm, where you'll spot herds of pure white thoroughbred Chianina cattle. There is also a full-sized swimming pool for the guests' use. Within easy reach are the highlights of Umbria, including Perugia (20 miles), Gubbio (8 miles), Assisi (15 miles) and Spoleto (45 miles). This is also the perfect base for a highly recommended day trip to Urbino, one of Italy's most splendid art cities, which lies about an hour away in The Marches.
