Anyone planning a trip to Sicily undoubtedly intends to visit the Valley of the Temples, to see some of the most exquisite ancient Greek architecture in the world. The three temples, which are 2600 years old, are awe-inspiring. But as so often happens with world-class destinations, the surrounding area has been overdeveloped and exploited with ugly modern hotels, just the kind of lodgings our readers are hoping to avoid. So when you make your pilgrimage to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, we suggest you consider staying about 15 minutes away on this secluded estate. You will have a spacious air-conditioned room in a beautifully renovated stone barn with ageold floors and wood-beamed ceilings. From your window you'll gaze out at the rolling hillsides, which have no reason to envy those of Tuscany. In the afternoon you'll relax by the elegant panoramic swimming pool or next to a roaring stone fireplace, and afterwards you'll enjoy a delicious dinner in the cozy restaurant. Your hostess Silvia is known far and wide for her scrumptious local cuisine, while her husband Giuseppe is the consummate host. They both speak good English and love to welcome new guests.
Because this is a family home, we really can’t consider it a bona fide hotel. It is more like a warm and welcoming B&B, and it is such an evocative and romantic retreat that it just isn't ideal for families with small children. Its five double rooms, three suites, one tower and two separate houses are all air conditioned and can sleep a maximum of 25 people at one time. Hence peace and quiet usually reign, and you'll have a chance to meet your fellow adventurers from around the globe when you share a table at dinner. Your lodgings will be in the main barn or in one of the houses. House 1 was once a minuscule train station (when the now-defunct railroad ran through here). It has a living room with fireplace, and eat-in kitchen with a full fridge/freezer, cooktop and microwave on the ground floor; 12 steps up on the second floor are two identical queen bedrooms with picture windows and en suite bathrooms (each featuring a stall shower). House 2 is about 500 yards from the main building, on a panoramic promontory with its own elegant swimming pool. It has a covered patio with dining table and barbecue as well as a supplementary outdoor shower. Inside, the big living room opens onto the kitchen, equipped with a fridge, microwave and cooktop. Only 5 steps lead up to the two identical bedrooms, each of which has a queen bed and bathroom with walk-in shower. Off the other side of the kitchen is the loft, which has two twin beds for children.
In the Main Building, the spectacular former barn, the ground floor is occupied by the restaurant, as well as two large sitting rooms with big picture windows, original stone walls and floors. The Summer Room is an air-conditioned glass-in patio; the Winter Room has a fireplace and loads of books to read on cozy evenings. A hearty homemade breakfast is served in another room, which is enlivened by Giuseppe’s whimsical paintings. Upstairs there are four double rooms (two of which can have twin beds), as well as three suites. The suites are Agave, Arancio and Oliva. Agave has a living room with single sleep sofa, a bedroom with queen bed, and a bathroom with shower. Across the hall is Oliva, featuring a living room with single sleep sofa, a single bedroom with en suite bathroom with shower, and a double bedroom (which can have a queen bed or twin beds) with en suite bathroom with bathtub. Arancio has a living room with two single sleep sofas, a bedroom with canopy queen bed, and a bathroom with separate shower and bathtub. Last but certianly not least is Piccionaia, a fantastic nest for honeymooners. On the third floor, it has a huge private terrace with 360-degree views and outdoor shower, an intimate bedroom with queen bed, and a bathroom with walk-in shower set right into the ancient stone walls. You will tell your grandchildren about spending your first wedded night in this special retreat!
