Casa Buonconvento

So many of our readers ask us to recommend a nice apartment in a town where they can walk to everything, and this is one of the nicest we have encountered in Tuscany. First of all, it's in a truly authentic medieval village completely surrounded by ancient stone walls. Indeed, this apartment is actually built into the walls! Just steps away are several shops where you can get all your daily necessities, plus a very well-known bakery where the ladies wear colorful local costume and cook up delicacies that are ordered by the Royal House of Windsor, among other far-flung and illustrious patrons! The local restaurant, whose unpretentious décor (or lack thereof!) would lead you to walk right past, is considered by many to be one of the best places in Tuscany to get the kind of yummy simple food that Grandma makes. Eat there twice and you will become a part of Grandma's family!

Buonconvento is also very close to a host of wonderful sights. Right down the road is Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a 14th-century Benedictine abbey that combines a picturesque setting with a monumental building, spectacular frescoes by Sodoma and Signorelli, and a shop selling all the goodies made by the monks for centuries, including jams, honeys, wines, liqueurs and elixirs. Pack a picnic and eat under the gigantic pine trees after you've toured the monastery. Within one hour's drive are Siena, Pienza, Montalcino, and Montepulciano; Cortona and San Gimignano are only slightly farther. The wonder about this part of Tuscany is that, although it is right smack in the center of the region, it has somehow remained a bit off the tourist track, thus retaining its friendly, quiet, old-fashioned charm. If you want to experience the real Tuscany, this is the place.

So Casa Buonconvento has been a dwelling for many, many centuries, and this is attested to by the soaring wood-beamed ceilings, the brick arches, and the terracotta floors -- all of which have been painstakingly restored by the present owners. In true Tuscan style, the furnishings are simple but tasteful, with just enough pieces to serve your daily needs but none to clutter up the living space. To get here, you climb 17 steps up the side of the ancient city wall and enter the living room, where armchairs and a sofa are arranged before the big open fireplace. Around the corner is a dining room, which opens onto the classic Tuscan kitchen, fitted with oven, gas burners, small fridge, separate freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Plenty of dishes and cookware will make it a joy to prepare meals here.

The sleeping arrangements are perfect for two friends, a couple or a family of three. There's a double bedroom with a queen size bed and window facing the garden, as well as an en suite bathroom with stall shower. Down the hall is a cozy studio with an excellent single sofa bed and an adjacent bathroom with shower. If you enjoy sleeping with the windows open, be our guests: there are screens on all the windows!
