If you'd like to stay in a classic Tuscan country setting and be able to walk into town, this adorable cottage might be the perfect choice for you. With its own private fenced garden and working fireplace, it also makes a very romantic retreat for one happy couple.
When you first get to Siena, if you're driving you'll avoid the city altogether and just park in your own space. If you're using public trwansportation, the house is about a 15-minute walk from the train station; the bus that goes to Florence stops just down the road; and the famous historical city center is a pleasant stroll away. There are shops and restaurants nearby as well, so you'll be able to do everything without a car or, if you have one, you'll always have parking right outside your door.
Inside, the casetta is a newly restored barn with lots of screened windows looking out onto its private garden, where lounge chairs and a dining set-up are shaded by ancient fir trees. Hardwood floors and wood-beamed cathedral ceilings add plenty of character and warmth in the living room, bedroom and large kitchen. Although it's a historic property, it also offers such modern amenities as a washing machine, full fridge and freezer, oven and range, dishwasher, and satellite TV. The spacious living room has a single sleepsofa in front of the fireplace; the kitchen has French doors leading to the garden; the bedroom has a wrought-iron queen bed, dresser and wardrobe; and the bathroom has new fixtures and a stall shower.
During the day, stroll into town and visit the majestic Piazza del Campo, the Duomo, the Palio contrada museums and Town Hall, with its spectacular Renaissance paintings. Or take the bus over to the hill town of San Gimignano. Other wonderful day trips are to Florence, Cortona and the Chianti. In the afternoon, relax in the garden with an aperitif and then try your hand at preparing a Tuscan meal -- or just walk down the road to a trattoria for a taste of the local cuisine. Afterwards, the stars will guide you home to enjoy sweet dreams in your charming Sienese cottage.
