Northern Europeans have long known about the superb scenic splendors of Lake Garda, whose glimmering blue waters stretch far off on the horizon interrupted only by the picturesque Island of Garda. The beautifully sculptured coastline encompasses many different microcosms. There's the fairy-tale town of Sirmione with its turreted castle, the historic turn-of-the-century resort towns, majestic Mount Baldo - which the locals affectionately call the sleeping giant - and there are the beautiful silver olive groves that produce what many consider to be the best oil in all of Italy. Our favorite part is the western shore, starting at the adorable little village of Gardone. Although there's plenty of activity here too -- such as the well-equipped private beach, great little restaurant and lively cafe that are right below this apartment -- the towns are much smaller and quainter, and the area lies within a National Park filled with olive groves, lemon and palm trees, bougainvillea and rare Mediterranean herb bushes. During many months of the year it is normal to see luxuriant flowers and century-old trees against a backdrop of snowy alpine mountains.

Right in the heart of the village, on the lakeshore in front of the boat dock, there is a landmark 19th-century building whose top two floors are occupied by this very large duplex apartment. With its four bedrooms, it offers comfortable sleeping for seven people (and no one has to camp out on the couch!). Walk three short flights up from the street and you'll enter the sunny living room, where plenty of seating is arranged around a fireplace. The opposite wall opens up to a long covered balcony where you can sit at two tables and chairs and gaze out at the spectacular scenery or watch the village activity for hours on end. Back inside, just beyond the dining area, is the beautiful kitchen, equipped with a full freezer-fridge, range, oven, dishwasher, and microwave. Completing this level of the duplex are the master bedroom with queen bed, and a bathroom with whirlpool bathtub and washing machine. Upstairs, under the traditional mansard roof, are two air-conditioned double bedrooms (one of which can have twin beds), as well as a single bedroom and a full bathroom with stall shower.

The owners of this apartment also have a hotel 300 yards away. Guests of Gardone Centro Apartment are welcome to use the hotel's panoramic swimming pool for adults (measuring 88 x 30 feet), small pool for children and spacious terrace reserved for sunbathing. The hotel's friendly staff are always there to help you, including recommendations for romantic lakeside restaurants or quaint, cheerful trattorias nestled amongst the olive groves and vineyards.

Whether you're planning a vacation for your family or a group of friends, you'll find plenty to do at Lake Garda, which has long been one of Italy's best-organized holiday destinations. Only a couple blocks away is the Vittoriale, Gabriele D'Annunzio's extravagantly furnished home. Just down the shore is Sirmione, a delightful town-within-a-castle that also offers fabulous spa treatments and massages. Kids will love Italy's answer to Disneyland, the Gardaland theme park that can hold its own against any in the world. Only slightly farther afield are the exquisite art cities of Bergamo (mysteriously overlooked by most American travel writers) and Verona. Also within an hour's drive are Mantova and Vicenza and Trento, treasure troves of history and world-class art. Set aside a day for an excursion into the southern Alps, and be sure to save plenty of time to relax beside the sparkling waters of beautiful Lake Garda.
