Lake Garda is a favorite holiday destination for Europeans, but not very well known among American travelers. Unlike its cousin Como, Garda is a fantastic family venue because it offers so many things for folks of all ages. So whereas your little ones might be frowned upon by the upper-class senior crowd in Bellagio, they will be fawned upon in the fairy-tale town of Sirmione. And everyone in your group will love the town's turreted 13th-century castle, which would be hopelessly picturesque even if it weren't set against a backdrop of deep blue water, shimmering silver olive groves and snow-capped alpine mountain peaks. This is a magical place, home to what many consider to be the best olive oil in all of Italy, and to a tiny town whose inhabitants' blood actually possesses an anti-cholesterol element known nowhere else on earth.
On the southern shore of the lake, Sirmione has been a resort town since the 1st century BC, when it was a favorite watering hole for the rich citizens of Verona, then the most important Roman city in northeast Italy. Verona's magnificent amphitheatre dates from this era, and we highly recommend a day trip to see the city's ancient monuments as well as the "Shakespearean sites" related to its most famous inhabitants, Romeo and Juliet. Alfred Tennyson wrote about the charms of Sirmione, and he would certainly have admired the 12th-century frescoes in the church of San Pietro, as well as the 15th-century frescoes in Santa Maria Maggiore. But what bewitched him most were the spectacular views across the gleaming water to the Alps at the far end of the lake. As Italy's largest lake, Garda is a sight few who have seen it will ever forget.
At Lake Garda Apartments you'll have the best of all the lake has to offer. The modern building offers 20 units ranging from one-room studios to family apartments. Each unit can be reached by elevator and has big picture windows, parquet or carpeted floors, modern furniture, a fully-equipped kitchenette, air conditioning or heating, wall safe, wireless Internet, direct-dial telephone and satellite TV, as well as a private bathroom with stall shower or bathtub, and an 85-square-foot balcony or private garden. Type A are one-room studios with one queen bed or two twin beds, plus a single sleep sofa. Type B have a living room with two single sleep sofas, plus a separate bedroom with one queen or two twin beds. Type B-Top are larger; Type B-Elegant are the same as Top but with two bathrooms and three balconies. Type C apartments have a living room, two double bedrooms and two bathrooms. Many Type B-Top and Type B-Elegant, and all Type C, have lake views. There is a private swimming pool on the premises, and parking is available right outside the building.
Whether you're planning a family holiday or a romantic getaway, you'll find plenty to do at Lake Garda, which has long been one of Italy's best-organized holiday destinations. Just up the western shore is the Vittoriale, Gabriele D'Annunzio's extravagantly furnished home. Sirmione itself is a world-renowned health resort where you can always get a fabulous spa treatment or massage. Kids will love Italy's answer to Disneyland, Gardaland, a theme park that can hold its own against any in the world. Only slightly farther afield are the exquisite art cities of Bergamo (mysteriously overlooked by most American travel writers) and Verona. Also within an hour's drive are Mantova and Vicenza and Trento, treasure troves of history and world-class art. Set aside a day for an excursion into the southern Alps, and be sure to save plenty of time to relax beside the sparkling waters of the lake. No matter what kind of holiday you want to have, Lake Garda can satisfy the fancies of everyone in your family, and maybe you, too, will start making an annual pilgrimage like so many Europeans!
