Roma Antica

This spacious apartment is in our favorite part of Rome, most of which dates back to the early Middle Ages. The streets here are many centuries old, paved with cobblestones, narrow, winding and often, still sloped according to the original topography of ancient Rome. Archways pass right through the ground floor of 600-year-old buildings, cats take the sun on marble fragments of who-knows-what renowned erstwhile statue, grannies trod along trailing their grocery carts, and a glossy mantle of dark green ivy coats many of the burnt sienna façades. This is a fascinating area, largely forgotten by tourists and Romans alike, populated both by working-class families and fabulously wealthy aristocrats (whose Ferraris you may glimpse if you happen to catch the nondescript doors of their garages open one day). The diehard devotés of Roma autentica consider this to be as good as it gets: a real neighborhood where people know each other, stop to chat, and remember a stranger's coffee preference after he's been there only one day. And though it is light years off the beaten track, you have but to cross Rome's oldest bridge to get to all the tourist attractions you've come to see.

The apartment is on a pedestrians-only street, 16 steps up from the ground. It has parquet floors and amazing wood-beamed ceiling throughout. The large living room has two single sleep sofas, as well as armchairs and a flat-screen satellite TV. Sun streams through the two big windows, lighting up the antique furniture and fireplace. Off to one side is a dining nook where you will enjoy meals prepared in the separate kitchen. Brand new, it features a full fridge/freezer, dishwasher, range and oven, and toaster.

When it comes time to sleep, you have two bedrooms, both of which face the quiet side street. One room has a queen bed and big wardrobe; the other has a desk and two twin beds that can also be made up as a double bed. Off the hall are two bathrooms, one with bathtub, storage closet and washing machine; the other with stall shower. The apartment also features a hair dryer, iron and board, and wireless Internet. If your group has a total of 6 adults and 4 children, you can also rent Trastevere Family Apartment, which is just down the block..
