If you wish to bring your family to Rome for a few days but you're worried about being crammed into a couple of hotel rooms, we suggest you consider setting up house in this elegant 2150-square-foot duplex. First of all, it is right next door to Rome's immense city park, Villa Borghese, so if the kids just have to get out and run around like wild Indians for half an hour, you have only to cross the street to find a safe, traffic-free place for them to let off steam. Afterwards, you can retreat to the very large living room, or barbecue up some steaks on the covered patio. You will truly be able to combine culture and relaxation in this wonderful Roman retreat, because it occupies an entire house on a very short dead-end street so there is little street noise and no loud footsteps overhead. All the glorious sights of Rome are just outside your doorstep: you can walk to almost everything in 20-30 minutes, or else you can take the subway to St. Peter's or the Coliseum (the stop is two blocks from home).

When you enter your own palazzo romano, six steps lead up to the spacious two-storey living room, which seems even bigger thanks to the French windows and glass doors that lead out onto your own private terrace. Here, a dining table and built-in barbecue await under a glass roof, and just beyond that is the secluded, tree-shaded terrace. Even on the hottest days of summer you will enjoy cool respite here. Back in the living room you'll find several armchairs and couches (one of which can be a sleep sofa for one adult or two children), as well as an ornamental fireplace. The owner, a European princess, has used her family's elegant furnishings, framed oil paintings, and personal accessories to give this room and the bedrooms a welcoming feel that goes way beyond what most vacation rentals offer.

Next to the living room is the kitchen. It is small but it has an oven, gas burners, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, small appliances, dishes and cookware. Completing this level of the duplex are a formal dining room, a bedroom with a queen bed, a small dressing room, and brand-new ultra-modern bathroom featuring a bathtub with wrap-around glass door, and two sinks.

From the living room, a flight of 12 steps leads up to the landing, where there is a library and ample space for storage. Off the landing is a bedroom with king bed and window overlooking the terrace, as well as a sleeping area with a futon for one adult or two small children, and a second bathroom with stall shower. The ladies will be delighted to know both bathrooms offer great lighting.

If it is, your greeters will show you how to use it and the only charge is for the electricity you use.
