Trastevere is often likened to New York's West Village or Paris's Fifth Arrondissement: all three are in the heart of the city, filled with character, crisscrossed by narrow winding streets lined with charming townhouses, funky shops and countless very authentic restaurants. Any Roman will tell you that Trastevere, which literally means "across the Tiber," is like a world unto itself. The residents have their own dialect, their own traditions and their own fascinating way of life. This uniqueness has made the neighborhood a magnet for visitors who want to immerse themselves in local culture.

Two things immediately drew us to this apartment: first, its upper floor location makes it sunny and bright and offers a wonderful vantage point for observing the activities in the gorgeous piazza below. Second, the building is only one block from the river, which means it is very easy to get to Piazza Navona and Rome's other Baroque attractions, plus it is only a 20-minute walk from the Forum or St. Peter's. In a city the size of Rome, walking distance is a big plus!

Lest you think everything great about this apartment is outside, please think again. After you take the elevator to the 4th floor, you will walk into a long hall lined with way more wardrobe space than you'll ever need. On the left you'll spy a charming queen bedroom, with two French doors leading onto the leafy furnished terrace. This bedroom has an en suite bathroom with bathtub and washing machine. Across the hall is the second bathroom, which has a nice big shower. At the end of the hall is the living room, featuring two sofas plus a double sleep sofa. A sliding glass door separates this from the dining room and kitchen; the former has two floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the piazza, while the latter is ultra-modern and equipped with a gas range, oven, dishwasher, toaster, kettle and plenty of pots, pans, dishes and glasses for the meals you will be enticed to prepare and serve on your private terrace. The apartment is completed by a second cozy bedroom, with a double bed and big window facing the courtyard. Both bedrooms and the terrace are on the rear of the house, making them quiet and relaxing. Although this apartment does not have central air conditioning, it does have units for each bedroom, as well ceiling fans, so you will find it to be a comfortable as well as inviting retreat after a day of busy sightseeing.
