Full-Day Excursion to the Chianti with Wine, Cheese, Olive Oil, Salami & Balsamic Vinegar Tastings, Medieval Villages & Castles
| Tour Length: 10 hours After you meet your guide at a central place in Florence, this completely unique semi-private full-day trip starts with a quick pause at Piazzale Michelangiolo for the best photo op in Italy: the entire city spread out at your feet in all its red-roofed glory. Next comes the impeccable Tuscan countryside, with its olive groves and dark green cypress trees and ochre villas and opulent vineyards. You will stop at one of these for a tasting of wine and olive oil, then it's on to a completely different kind of farm producing salamis, cheeses and balsamic vinegar, all of which you'll taste. Now it's time for lunch! Here's how you do it in Tuscany: start with a toast of rosé or sparkling white wine accompanied by appetizers made from vegetables and meats produced on site, then proceed to a pasta dish, followed by local cheese dressed with balsamic, and end with homemade dessert, all washed down with three different wines. More glorious scenery awaits on the road to Castellina in Chianti, where you'll have free time to visit the town and walk off some of that lunch! On the way home you'll stop in Europe's tiniest walled medieval village, and then you're off to the enchanting ancient town of Fiesole, perched atop a hill overlooking Florence. Depending on how much time remains, you are free to visit the Etruscan tombs, the Roman amphitheatre, the cathedral and the church of San Francesco before returning to Florence at 7:30pm. |

Be seduced by the eternal charm of the Tuscan art cities, where the beauty of monuments is linked to the rhythm of life on a human scale, and where every stone exudes centuries of history. After a drive through the typical Tuscan countryside hill territory you will reach medieval Siena, whose artistic treasures have been recognized by UNESCO. You will visit the unique, shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, where the Palazzo Comunale (1298) is flanked by the tall Torre del Mangia (1325). It is here that the world-famous "Palio" race takes place each year. You may use your free time to visit the splendid Cathedral, one of the highest artistic expressions of the Middle Ages, and admire the majestic buildings and ornate churches along the narrow lively streets. From Siena, a panoramic road takes you past vineyards and olive groves, through the heart of the Chianti territory on your way to the ancient fortified hamlet of Monteriggioni. This small jewel was built during the 13th century and is still surrounded by the original walls, studded with eleven towers. Take a walk within this comforting perimeter and discover a beautiful corner of Tuscany that looks almost exactly as it did in the Middle Ages.
A short distance away, in a pleasant country estate surrounded by aromatic plants, you will be served a lunch of typical Chianti products. The friendly owner of the farm will treat you to a guided tasting of his fine Chianti and Vernaccia wines.
| After lunch, you'll drive a short distance to San Gimignano, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, nicknamed "The Manhattan of the Middle Ages," thanks to its 17 extant towers. A stroll through the town centre means discovering true jewels of art, among which are Piazza della Cisterna, the Cathedral, Palazzo del Podestà and the Church of Sant' Agostino. Afterwards you'll be off to Pisa, where you'll be greeted by yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Piazza dei Miracoli. The famous Leaning Tower, the magnificent Baptistery, the stunning Cathedral, and the Monumental Graveyard are all maximum expressions of 12th- and 13th-century Romanesque architecture, and the works housed inside are of equally immense artistic value. | ![]() |

The beauty of the landscape is the perfect result of nature's way and man's handiwork, created over centuries. Dive into a "sea of beauty," experience the emotional discovery of artistic masterpieces, discover a famous seaside resort and relax amidst beautiful nature. Lucca is along the road that leads from Florence to the coast. It is a refined city of art, surrounded by Renaissance style tree-lined walls, interrupted by beautiful doors and impressive bastions. You can start with a beautiful walk along one of the world's most unique city walls, enjoying unforgettable glimpses of roofs, alleys, tower-houses, elaborate churches and aristocratic palaces. Then move into the historical town centre, which is easy to visit because of its dimensions. Discover Piazza San Michele, the heart of the city, with its exquisite Basilica in white limestone (12th-14th century) and the majestic Palazzo Pretorio. Pass by the characteristic shops overlooking the squares and narrow roads and reach Piazza del Mercato, whose singular round shape traces the 2nd-century BC Roman amphitheatre upon which it is built. Then visit the famous Gothic Cathedral of San Martino (11th century), the sculptural masterpiece of the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto, and surprising Torre Guinigi -- a medieval watchtower that has an oak tree growing on its roof.
After a short journey, you'll reach the seaside town of Viareggio, famous for its beautiful sandy beaches and for the whimsical Art Deco architecture that characterizes many of its buildings. You'll love the thrilling walk along the seaside promenade, lined with cafès-chantant, restaurants, shops, and venues that are among the most elegant of the coast. Enjoy some free time to admire the architecture of the bathing establishments along the famous Viale Margherita, the chalet and cafés, including the Gran Caffè Margherita, symbol of the city. You can taste the fragrant cuisine of Viareggio in one of the many restaurants on the seafront and, during the warmer seasons, take a dip in the warm Tyrrhenian Sea. Either way, do not miss the spectacular backdrop of the Apuan Alps, made of gleaming white marble that looks just like snow. This marble is so pure that Michelangelo spent four years building a road to mine it and use it for his masterpieces. Later in the afternoon, you'll head back inland to the famous city of Pisa, where you'll be met by the glittering sight of Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, scattered on an emerald green lawn, are four peerless marble masterpieces: the famed Leaning Tower, the magnificent Baptistery, the stunning Cathedral, and the Monumental Graveyard, all maximum expressions of 12th- and 13th-century Romanesque architecture.

Driving along roads suspended between sky and sea, you will pass medieval fishing villages miraculously clinging to the rocks. From the sea, you will thrill to the charm of pastel-coloured houses, the bell towers and olive groves, and then experience the magic of a very special village celebrated by Byron and Shelley. Your drive takes you across the northern edge of Tuscany to the sea, then northward past the gleaming white marble slopes of the Apuan Alps and into Liguria. Your first stop is Riomaggiore, a breathtaking jumble of brightly-coloured homes, steps, alleys and small squares. From here you'll stroll along the famous and romantic "Via dell'Amore," an easy walk on a paved path that hugs the cliffs leading to Manarola, nestled in a gorge among vines, olive trees and fragrant Mediterranean brush. Invigorated by the exercise and the sea air, you'll head by bus to Vernazza, one of the "Most Beautiful Hamlets in Italy." Perched on a rocky promontory above a tiny harbor framed by terraced green hills, it is the perfect meeting of nature's evolution and human handiwork. From the beach, you'll admire the houses, then wander among the shops and be tempted by the seafood cuisine in a typical restaurant.

Afterwards, you'll have a different perspective of these villages as you travel by sea in an excursion boat along the stretch between Vernazza and Portovenere. It seems hard to believe anything could match this beauty, but Portovenere has a spectacular treasure that perfectly caps this unforgettable day. Here you will walk along the seaside, past shops selling typical products and local handicrafts, ending up at the Gothic Church of San Pietro (1198). Perched at the edge of a dramatic promontory, with its horizontal bands of black and white marble, it sits atop the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Venus but looks for all the world like the castle of King Arthur's Court. The village also invites you to admire the medieval sculptures of the Collegiate of San Lorenzo (1130) and the imposing Castello Doria. |

| Be captured by the emotions of the natural scenery of central Italy's largest lake, with its mysterious cane thickets surrounded by hills covered with silvery olive trees. After a scenic drive south through the Tuscan countryside, the first town you'll encounter is Passignano sul Trasimeno, a small medieval hamlet with city walls and a beautiful fortress, the perfect vantage point for this most picturesque lake and its islands. More ageold landscapes will thrill you until you reach the ancient city of Perugia. Evidence of its Etruscan origin is preserved in the travertine walls and in the well in the central square. Perugia is a classic Italian art city, boasting such architectural jewels as the superb Palazzo dei Priori (1293-1443) and the splendid Cathedral (1345), as well as the Loggia (1423), and the elegant Fontana Maggiore (1275), a priceless 13th-century masterpiece. | ![]() |
The excursion continues to the exquisite hill town where the patron saint of Italy, Saint Francis of Assisi (1181- 1226) lived, worked and died. Nestled at the foot of Mount Subasio, the hill on which Assisi rises, the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli was actually built to protect the famed tiny church called "Porziuncola," where Saint Francis acknowledged his vocation and founded the Order of the Minor Friars. It was here that Santa Chiara also began her monastic life. You will see the miraculous "rosebush without thorns," which continues to grow only here and which, according to legend, originated from the saint's contact with a typical thorny rosebush. After a break for lunch, you will continue up the hill to the centre of Assisi, where you will meet with an expert local guide who will accompany you on an exciting visit to the civil and religious artistic heritage of the city. Admire the splendid pink-and-white marble Gothic Basilica dedicated to Saint Chiara (1257), the Renaissance Chiesa Nuova with its elegant Dome, and the Roman temple of Minerva, which still preserves its 1st-century AD façade. Discover the 14th-century Monte Frumentario and finally, visit St Francis' Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built with the rose-white stone quarried on Mount Subasio. The exquisite frescoed cycles by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Lorenzetti are preserved inside the Basilica. Breathe the special atmosphere of serenity and joy that this city emanates and you will understand why it has been chosen as symbol of Peace by the delegates of the main religions in the world.
