The Palio of San Secondo, June
1-3, Parma
Everyone has heard of the Palio, but did you know that there are many Palio races in Italy? "Palio" means
banner, and refers to the trophy that is earned by the winning neighborhood in a battle which might be a horse
race (as in Siena), or a jousting competition, as in Parma. This exquisite Renaissance town in the center
of Italy boasts the "smallest rings of any jousting competition in Italy." The annual event goes
back to 1523, and all participants (from six local 'hoods) wear 16th-century costumes as they try to thrust
their spear through that tiny brass aperture. Banquets and street festivals surround the event. For more details
