The area between Genoa and Pisa is one of the most dramatically scenic in Italy.

A picturesque combination of steep hillsides, terraced vineyards, brightly-colored villages, teensy fishing
harbors and medieval castles can all be visited easily using the little trains that whiz along the coast,
or tourist boats that ply the waves (from Easter to September) or a dense web of hiking trails that range
from the easy Lover’s Walk to the most challenging goat path that will have you scrambling straight
up along steps cut into the very earth itself.

Don’t plan to “drop in” for a day on the way to somewhere: although you will get the views,
you will miss the experience of this very special micro-culture that has existed on its own for centuries.

Be sure to try some of the native pesto sauce while you’re here!
