Genoa's Museum of the Sea

[Regions of Italy] [Back to Liguria]

Genoa's Museo del Mare, inaugurated in 2004, is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean. Not to be confused with the city's naval museum (Museo Navale), the Museo del Mare or Galata, as it is also known, is the oldest building still intact from the arsenal of the glorious Maritime Republic of Genoa. It was here that the Republic's galleys were built in the 17th century; indeed, you can see a faithful reconstruction of one on display. There are other models, as well as an arms collection, an exhibit about the port of Genoa in the 16th century, a show about transatlantic liners and more than 6000 original objects illustrating man's relationship with the sea, dating all the way back to the city's native son, Cristoforo Colombo. Any child who is wild about ships will find this place to be a special treat! Open March-October 10am-7:30pm (last entry at 6pm); November-February Tues-Fri 10am-6pm (last entry 5pm) and Sat-Sun 10am-7:30pm (last entry 6pm); closed on Mondays except in August. Located at Calata De Mari, 1 (Darsena - Via Gramsci), tel. 010-234-5655. For information, email the museum.

A wonderful country inn just outside Genoa is Palazzo Fieschi.
