Dawn

The famous Medici funerary chapels. The first, Cappella dei Principi, where Cosimo and the other Grand Dukes of Tuscany lie, is the later of the two. Its elaborate Baroque interior took two centuries to complete! Note the fine examples of Florentine mosaic - fine inlay done with semi-precious stones. But the real attraction is the Sagrestia Nuova, a companion piece to the Sagrestia Vecchia in the adjoining basilica. Michelangelo designed both the interior (his first architectural job) and the statuary as a fitting resting place for the popes and cardinals of the Medici family. He worked on it from 1521 to 1533 and left two tombs incomplete, but did finish the tomb of Lorenzo II, with figures of Dawn and Dusk, and the tomb of Giuliano, Duke of Nemours, with figures of Night and Day. They are considered some of his finest work. Lorenzo Il Magnifico and his brother Giuliano (who was murdered in the cathedral) are buried in the tomb opposite the altar, which bears a splendid Madonna with Child by Michelangelo.
