Places to Stay in Sardinia |
 |
Generally speaking, if you're looking for very economical accommodations in Sardinia, expect to get basic, even primitive, lodgings. Some of the hotels on the Costa Smeralda are among the world's most luxurious, and you'll pay dearly for the experience. In Italy Online does not currently work with these properties, but we are always happy to inform our readers about places we or other readers love (or hate!). We cannot help you book these properties. To do it on your own, contact them well in advance. We recommend you telephone first, then follow up by sending our form letter in Italian.
- La Rosa dei Venti is a charming B&B on the island of Sant'Antioco, in southern Sardinia.
- Su Gologone (08025, Oliena; tel. 011-39-0784-287-512, fax 287668). If you're planning to drive across the Barbagia, in the mountainous heart of the island, this is the place to stay. A garden oasis where small whitewashed houses dripping with flowering vines are surrounded by olive and pine groves, it also has an outstanding restaurant serving local specialties. Rooms are cozy and bright, with spectacular views across the valley. There's a pool, and horses for treking.
- Capriccioli (07020 Porto Cervo; tel. 011-39-0789-96004). This small, family-run hotel is much less expensive than its fancy neighbors, but it's just as close to the sandy beach, there's a nice terrace restaurant overlooking the fishing harbor, and the rustic rooms are comfortable enough.
- Dei Pini (loc. Le Bombarde, 07041 Alghero; tel. 011-39-079-930-157, fax 930-259). Set in a pine forest about 15 miles from Alghero, this simple inn has 90 rooms with balcony, a great beach, tennis court and restaurant.
- Calamosca (località Capo S. Elia, 09100 Cagliari; tel. 70/370-252, fax 370-346). Definitely the nicest seaside hotel in the area, it is set on its own promontory covered with Mediterranean underbrush, whose heavenly scent is stronger in Sardinia than anywhere else. Ask for a room overlooking the pineta (pine woods). $80./double with breakfast.
- Cormoran (Località Campus, 09049 Villasimius-Foxi; tel. 70/798-101, fax 798-131). About a 45-minute drive south of Cagliari, this 86-room hotel sits on the fabulous Capo Boi beach, with great views across the bay to the Isle of Cavoli. Open May-Oct. $125.-190./double.
- Toluca (Lido di Platamona, 07037 Sorso; tel./fax 011-39-079-310-234). Another friendly, family-run establishment just 50 yards from the locals' favorite beach in Sassari. Some rooms front onto the sea and others face the peaceful pine forest behind. Simple but comfortable. Half board is required in summer.
- Hotel Club del Golfo
If you are looking for a classic luxury vacation, few places will satisfy you better than the Costa Smeralda, where kings and magnates have been mooring their yachts for decades. Most travel agents and guide books will tell you the Pitrizza (07020 Porto Cervo; tel. 011-39-0789-930111, fax 930611) is the toniest hostelry, but we bet you'll find fewer paparazzi and more charm at the resort's first hotel, Cala di Volpe (07020 Porto Cervo; tel. 011-39-0789-96083, fax 96442). From the moment you drive through its gate and see the hotel nestled in the bend of one of the earth's most breathtaking bays, you'll feel like you've gone to heaven. Inside, the rooms perfectly blend modern amenities with a rustic local setting. And you're bound to see famous faces on the private beach. But be prepared: this is definitely in the "splurge" category. Obligatory half board. Open mid-May through September.
In Italy Online is not a government agency, so we don't have lists of hotels. We regret we are also unable to look up addresses or phone numbers.
