You
may not have planned a detour to visit this charming provincial capital on the northeastern tip of Sicily, but many Mediterranean cruises stop here, and anyone traveling to the island by car or train must pass through, so we urge you to pause a few hours and take the classic red London-style double-decker bus that will introduce you to the city. As you make your way down streets lined with ornate Baroque palaces, through piazzas dominated by extravagant fountains, past countless monumental statues, you'll find it hard to believe most of this historic splendor is actually a 20th-century recreation of the city that was leveled by the 1908 earthquake that killed 80,000 people, then finished off by Allied bombing in World War II. Try to time your hops so that you get to the gorgeous cathedral at noon, when one of the largest astronomical clocks in the world puts on an intricate display of life-size animated figures acting out scenes from the city's history. Each of the two Hop On-Hop Off buses makes five stops; if you purchase your ticket online, you can board either bus at any of them. On board, your hostess will give you disposable earphones for an audio guide in 6 languages (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish and Russian). Your ticket is valid for 24 hours on both routes, so you can get on and off as much as you want.
All buses are wheelchair accessible.
This service is available May-October. Tickets become valid when you board the first bus. They cost 20 Euro/adult; 10 Euro/child 5-15 years old; accompanied children 0-4 years old ride free of charge.
