If you're an independent traveler with one day or even only part of a day to see Padua, a great way to get around is the classic red London-style double-decker bus which meanders through the city, inside the ancient fortified walls that have withstood many a battle. Ever since the university was founded in the 12th century, Europe's great thinkers have flocked to what is considered Italy's largest square, Prato Della Valle. Leading off it in all directions are the portico-covered streets that lead to the city's many cafes, palaces and monuments, chief among which is the Basilica of Sant'Antonio. Apart from its status as one of the world's leading pilgrimage shrines, this impressive house of worship is also home to three gorgeous frescoes by Titian, as well as the exquisite Scrovegni Chapel, entirely covered with Giotto's groundbreaking frescoes. Recently restored to their original dazzling beauty, they are said to be the first works of the Renaissance, and they should be high on the list of any art-lover's must-sees. The Hop On-Hop Off bus makes 11 stops through the city, and if you purchase your ticket online, you can board the bus at any of them. On board, your hostess will give you disposable earphones for an audio guide in 7 languages (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Polish and Japanese). Your ticket is valid for 24 hours, you can get on and off as much as you want, and in summer you can combine it with a boat trip in a modern copy of a historic vessel plying the inner waterways of this enchanting city.
